Larry, I remember the 1959 IRT West Side changeover very well. The #1 trains all became the newer R21/22 equipment, eight cars long. The old Low-V equipment on the 137th Street short turn locals was replaced. The new service was dubbed "high speed local service" and was advertised as being time competitive with the old Broadway Express that switched to and from the express track at 96th Street.

Other improvements unveiled on 2/6/59 involved the stations. 10 car local platforms at 86, 79, 66, 59, and 50 Streets were unveiled. Previously, these platforms were only 5 cars long, creating a major capacity constraint. 91st Street was closed. 96th Street was rebuilt and lengthened to 94th Street where a new south mezzanine and fare control opened. The old local platforms at 96th were also closed on that day.
