Listed below are the affected lines with their former railroad Discontinued on Friday, September 30, 1966 Northern Branch - x Erie Railroad Service is discontinued between Hoboken and Sparkill, NJ. The following stations are closed; Susquehanna Transfer, Ridgefield, Palisades Park, Leonia, Englewood, Hudson Avenue / Englewood, Tenafly, Cresskill, Demarest, Closter, Norwood, Northvale and Sparkill. Greenwood Lake Division -x Erie Railroad Service is between Mountain View and Wanaque, NJ. The following stations are closed; Wayne, Pequannock, Pompton Plains, Pompton - Riverdale, Haskell and Wanaque - Midvale. Caldwell Branch - x Erie Railroad Service is discontinued between Great Notch and Essex Fells, NJ. The following stations are closed; Cedar Grove, Verona, Caldwell and Essex Fells. Carlton Hill Spur - x Erie Railroad Service is discontinued between Rutherford and Carlton Hill, NJ. The following station is closed; Carlton Hill. Newark Branch - x Erie Railroad Service is discontinued between Hoboken and South Patterson, NJ. The following stations are closed; Harrison (Davis Avenue), Kearny, Newark (Fourth Avenue), Woodside, Cleveland Street / Belleville, Belleville, Nutley (Walnut Street), Nutley, Nutley (Franklin Avenue), Allwood, and Athenia (Colfax Avenue). Discontinued on Saturday, October 1, 1966. Morristown Line - x Lackawanna Railroad Service is discontinued between Netcong and Washington, NJ. The following station are closed; Hackettstown and Washington. (Note: Although Hackettstown and Washington stations are located on the Morristown Line they are service by Boonton Line trains.) Discontinued on Sunday, October 2, 1966. Sussex Branch - x Lackawanna Railroad Service is discontinued between Netcong and Branchville, NJ. The following stations are closed; Cranberry Lake, Andover, Newton, Lafayette and Branchville. In addition to the discontinuances the remaining lines suffered major cutbacks in service. The Boonton line would lose weekend service while the Montclair Branch would only operate the weekday rush. Sunday suburban service on the x-Erie Main Line would end as well. IIRC the Greenwood Lake branch was a shuttle of sorts after 1963. That's when through service ended. At any rate, we missed it by 8 1/2 months when we moved to Pompton Plains in June of 1967. The old Pompton Plains depot is still standing. |

I'm guessing they were in dire financial straits by 1966. All the railroads that operated commuter trains were. There was very little state assistance in those days. In fact it was just the opposite. The states looked on the railroads as a "cash cow" and imposed heavy property taxes on them. That being said it was hard to justify the retention of the Northern Branch with its six rush hour trains or the single stop Carlton Hill Spur among others. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Jersey Transit took over the routes operated by Intercity Bus Company. When we lived in Pompton Plains, Northeast Coach Lines operated bus service to PABT from Culver Lake or Newfoundland, down Rt. 23 through Pompton Plains and Pequannock via the old Newark-Pompton Turnpike and continued south on 23 to Cedar Grove, where buses would turn onto Ridge Road back to US 46. They'd swing over to NJ 3 to the Lincoln Tunnel. During rush hours, they would go directly to US 46 from 23, bypassing Cedar Grove altogether. I saw a timetable for 197 a few years back and noticed that they even have buses that bypass Pompton Plains and stay on Rt. 23.Having bus service through that town made it very convenient to go to the city. That's how I commuted to the city every Saturday for three years and in the process, got to know the subway system. |

Anyway, I have a question- is the station in downtown Englewood the same one you listed under "Northern Branch"? Main: I did some research and came up with the following information about Englewood. The Englewood Station on the Northern Branch was located at MP 13.9 from Jersey City. It was a two track freight and passenger station with station house on both side. By 1959 the northbound track had been removed and all trains were using the former southbound track in both directions. By 1966 the station house on the east side had been removed and converted into a parking lot. A 1966 photo shows single track and platform still in use. The station house now includes a “Stix and Stones” which may have been a local restaurant. Across the street on the west side is an “American” gas station. If the route we took had a number, it was almost never displayed on bus signs. If a city-bound bus was running local through Cedar Grove, it would show, "New York City P. A. Terminal via Lincoln Tunnel." If it was running express via US 46, it said, "New York Express." Going the other way, buses would say either, "Newfoundland" or, "Newfoundland Express." On one occasion, a bus was showing a route 30 sign with similar destination info. |

It was right about this time in 1969 that Intercity Bus went on strike for a couple of weeks. My father drove us to Brooklyn in the morning and we tried two different routes home. One Saturday we took a Lakeland bus from PABT to Lincoln Park and the following week we rode on PATH from 33rd St. to Newark and from there we took a bus. There was a bus service between Newark and Butler that also went through Pompton Plains. And yes, we had to change PATH trains. I remember boarding a train marked NWK at probably Exchange Place. That was the only time to date I've ever ridden on PATH. |

The #35 rand from Ridgewood, NJ to PABT on W 41st St. The other was a rush-hour #45 that ran to the old Inter-city bus terminal near 168th St/Broadway. Anyone remember that bus terminal, before the GWB terminal was opened? |

I lived a few blocks away from the terminal and I remember there was a special exit gate at the S/E of the 168 St mezzanine that was opened in the PM rush so that passengers exiting from the A or BB trains could run right upstairs to the bus terminal. I seem to recall that the route from the bus terminal to the GWB was a bit convoluted with buses going up Audubon Av to 173 St, across 173 St to St Nicholas Av and via St Nicholas to 178 St and left to the bridge. The route was significantly changed in the mid 1950s when a student at Incarnation school which was at 175 St and St Nicholas was playing roller hockey in the play street and inadvertently rolled into St Nicholas Av and was crushed to death under a Jersey bus. After that, all the Jersey buses were routed so that they went up Bway from the terminal to the bridge even though the FACCO rte 3 continued to use St Nicholas. |

I remember that dingy waiting room that we shared with the winos and panhandlers. Once, my great-aunt took a #45 Inter-City bus home, instead of a PABT- bound #35. She had to take the "A" train all the way from 168th St to B'way-East NY station, get the B-56 bus from Jewel Square to Jamaica Ave/New Jersey Ave, and walk home from there. Back then, the "A" always ran local in Brooklyn, with the rush-hour "E" trains running express to the Rockaways. Quite a trip! |

IIRC #35 started in Ridgewood, took Rt. 4 to 17, then went down 17 to Rt 3, then to PABT via Lincoln Tunnel. I remember watching a Northeast driver crank the destination curtain once and seeing, 35 Express via Rt 17; 35 via Rt 17; 41 Ridgewood via Rt 4 among others. |
