W coming back November 7 |
|
Posted by Allan on Fri Sep 23 20:54:01 2016 While I have not found it in the current MTA Press releases, it was reported on TV news and in the AM NY and Metro newspapers that the W will resume service (Astoria to Whitehall) on Monday 11/7. The Q will then terminate (for the time being) at 57/7.No mention anywhere about the R shuttle being extended to Whitehall during overnight hours. |

Maybe Chambers/Nassau.Until late 1967, the "10" and the "TT" terminated there simultaneously, while the "15" and "M" (Brighton-Nassau Loop) ran through, and the "14" was done at Canal St". After Chrystie, that became the "M" and the short-lived "RJ" which ran through. Quite a mess. |

Yes, East 180th Street in the Bronx - the usual route being the late night #5 Dyre Avenue Shuttle. Years ago (or even up to now) it was the practice to terminate some #5 (or #2) trains at East 180th Street on a regular basis. Often on weekends with G.O. type work #5 trains between the Bronx and Manhattan often end there.Yes, 36th Street-Fourth Avenue in Brooklyn - the usual route being the late night R-train Shuttle. In addition years ago (or even up to now) plenty of Fourth Avenue local trains terminated at 36th Street on a regular basis. In addition over time, each of the branches - Fourth Avenue local, West End and Sea Beach have had a late night shuttle operation that ended at that station. Yes, Euclid Avenue in Brooklyn - the usual route being the regular every day C or CC Fulton Street local trains (and some versions of the E-train), as well as the late night "Round Robin" train service to/from the Rockaways. Over time plenty of the Rockaway train operations involved ending at Euclid Avenue. I believe that current late night Lefferts Blvd shuttle trains also now end at Euclid Avenue. Mike |

I remember the south sign of the R38 had a readout for "Hudson Terminal". Was that true of the R32 ? Not sure, but I seem to remember they only had "Chambers Street". If my suspicion is true, it seems the R32 was intended for the BMT. |

Actually, prior to 1959, Myrtle.Chambers ran 6 days a week M-Sat all day from about 600AM to around 800PM. In 1959, it became a 5 day a week service M - F but by 1960 it was rush hour only, Until about 1960, Culvers via tunnel from Ditmas turned at Chambers except during midnights and on weekends when it was a shuttle between Ditmas and 36 St. When the Culver became a full time shuttle between Ditmas and 9 Av, West End Lcls became the 6A to 8 P (or so) service between Stl and Chambers M - F. During rush hours, West End lcls laid up from Chambers St with some trains running light back to CI Yd and 3 trains laying up to DO Yd. The 4 Av bankers’ specials coming over the Manny B N/B ran S/B through the tunnel as West End lcls either laying up to bay Pky or turning back N/B at 9 Av. In the AM, there were 5 4 Av bankers’ specials and 5 Brighton Bankers’ specials, the Brightons operating vial the tunnel and originating at Brighton Bch. In the PM, there were only 3 of each of the bankers’ specials with the 3 put ins from DO Yd replacing 3 West End lcls coming from 9 Ave that went back to 95 St as PM bankers’ specials. Actually, at that time, 9 Av was also a two way terminal since selected West End lcls terminated there S/B and Culver shuttles terminated there N/B. The PM Brighton Bankers’ specials operated through to Stl. Additionally, Canal/Bway was a terminal for a few select S/B 4 Av and Brighton lcls coming from Ctl or Astoria with 3 AM West end exps operating N/B in the AM M - F. In the PM, the last 3 West End exps operated via the tunnel to Canal St M - Sat where they laid up to C/Hall Yd. M-F those layups became the 3 West End put ins for Astoria but on Sat AM, those trains were put in S/B at City Hall. Another station that was used in both directions was E/Pky on the J. During middays, the Bway Bkln Lcls terminated there Jamaica bound and at night and weekends, the Fulton St el terminated there Manhattan bound when Rocky Av was closed. |

I forgot about this in my list of all the BMT ones I could think of. Another IRT one is 96/Bway. Up until the early 1950s or so, midnight 145/Lenox shuttles terminated there turning back on a tail switch S/O the station between tks 2 and 3 which was removed when the platforms were lengthened. Before the yd lead from 207 St on the Bway Line to 207 Yd, a few AM #1s went O/S at 96 St and went light to 239 Yd to be washed. Also, don’t forget Qnsbro Plaza during the days of joint BMT/IRT operation when the steel trains of the BMT subway turned from N/B to S/B and el car shuttles turned from S/B to N/B. According to some old timers I worked with, the Manhattan els also had a few locations where mainline trains connected with shuttles during midnight hours. Mainline S/B 3 Av El trains terminated at Canal St and a midnight shuttle ran between Canal and So/Fy. N/B mainline trains terminated at Fordham Rd and connecting shuttles operated between Fordham and 241 St. Back to the BMT, the Culver had mainline trains from Manh terminating at K/Hwy with connecting el car shuttles to Stl and the West End had a similar set up at Bay Pky. |

I’m not sure exactly when Culver was cutback to 9 Av but it was around 1960. It was about the same time that the 4 Av and Brighton Lcls swapped north terminals between Ctl and Astoria. Brightons ran to Astoria and 4 Aves went to Ctl about 6A - P M-F and 57 St other times. |

All the times I saw R-32s on the AA, it was set to Chambers St. Never knew that the 32s had a Hudson Terminal reading. Never saw an R-42 on the AA, so I don't know what that reading was. I think R68s (or R68As) on the Q to 96th would make sense. The route does not vary- it'll always (other than GOs) run from Coney Island to 96th Street, and at those terminals (especially 96th) I can't see any need to quickly change route designations. Now, we can reconsider this if the R68s are still around when the T comes along... |

There was a time that you could see any car type on any line. You just never knew what would show up. The TA didn't make it any easier with the limited route signs on the R40/42/44s. After the first few years of specific assignments they were all over the place and would display blank signs when they ran on routes they weren't intended for. |

My guess is that the 2nd Ave subway will get all R160 as a showcase. They aren't going to put the older cars on their shiny new line. Yeah, now that I think it through, I think you're right- the "suits" will want the Stubway to be a showpiece line with the very newest equipment. Almost certain to be R160 and/or R179.I thought my idea (actually, I think I cribbed it from another poster) to put the NTTs on routes likely to need sign changes, such as the N/W made more sense. But sense does not always prevail. As for running older equipment on new lines, there's no good reason not to do it. As long as all cars on the road are maintained to reliability, and replaced when maintenance becomes impractical, it should make no difference which route has 8 year old cars and which has 28 year old cars. But I've been around long enough to know that politics and optics do not always allow practicality to prevail. |
