No, technically if they are on PCC design trucks, they are PCCs. Same story the first fleet in Cleveland which look like IRT car bodies but rode on PCC trucks. Similarly afleet for what is tody's Blue Line in Boston were considered PCCs as they used the same trucks. |

Which, incidentally, constituted a "proof of concept" for the BMT in demonstrating that streetcars and rapid transit cars could share a maintenance base through the use of PCC technology.Came a tad late, though. |

The car is a Red Arrow Streamliner that was owned by the New Hope Steam Railway in the 1980s, where it was given its present livery. |

Posted by randyo on Wed Aug 24 16:10:32 2016, in response to Re: That trolley graveyard, posted by SLRT on Wed Aug 24 09:01:46 2016. Correct. According to the book “PCC The Car That Fought Back,” any car which had PCC developed components or on which royalties were paid to the President’s Conference Committee were considered PCCs. Additionally, many innovations developed for PCC streetcars were used on rapid transit cars which are referred to as PCC rapid transit cars. Interestingly, although they are not referred to specifically as PCC rapid transit cars, the NYCTS R-11s had a PCC designed truck called the “Model E” which while developed by the PCC, was an outside frame truck and not the usual inside frame truck associated with PCC equipment. |

The trucks should be salvageable, maybe the seat frames too. There's not much else I can think of that could be repurposed. But as the photos show the rust and rot on the car bodies, any kind of restoration would be extremely costly. Cutting out and replacing flat sections of rot can be done. Replacing rot from curved areas, especially the sign boxes would be laborious and costly. If the cars were stored in the confines of a dry warehouse, shielded from the sun, then they could be restored. The man who purchased these cars for restoration to live once again may have done a good deed initially. But to be stored unprotected in the elements for years was a slow death sentence. Yes, even those cars are considered PCC's, even though they were built with new parts instead of salvaged PCC streetcar parts, the car bodies, control systems and trucks still used the patents. |

Well, they were purchased to supply serviceable or restorable cars to the proposed low cost streetcar projects that were popping up around the US in the 90's, just as these cars were getting retired. The cars were available for the cost of moving them off the transit property. The Boston air cars were literally rebuilt by the T and put on the scrap line, so not all of them were worn out junk. Some other cars were near junk, but saving them was better than having them gone forever. What happened is that the federal funding and interest in using the old streamliners dried up. Now the federal money is for modern streetcars which as we know are popping all over the place. Several of the PCC's have already donated trucks and parts. Three nice Boston air cars were inside the large shed all this time protected and a Philly car I believe has joined them. The Pittsburgh 1700's and two of the Shaker cars outside have collapsed over their trucks, but bear many valuable parts yet. Just have to keep the kiddie vandals, "abandoned" explorer types and mal-informed bloggers off the private property. |
