These two videos were taken in April 2008 and August 2009 respectively. It is of a ride to Short Beach on former BMT Gate car 1349 at the Shore Line Trolley Museum. This car used to run on the Myrtle Ave elevated. 1349 is not completely restored and still needs some work. Its sister car 1362 is at the museum but it hasn't ran in years. This is my last video taken with my first camera. The second video is of a ride on Johnstown Trolley car 358 on the Strand to the Trolley Museum of New York. The museum isn't electrified yet so 358 runs on a diesel engine until the museum can electrify. The tracks on East Strand Road need to be replaced as the ride over them can be very bump and as a result the trains have to move at a very low speed over the Strand.

Thanks for the videos.

Even if the TMNY track were perfect in that section, electric operation or not, all movements would still be under restricted speed due to the presence of pedestrians and automobiles.

Its been estimated that the repair of the track in that quarter-mile section is $780,000, being its in a brick-lined public thoroughfare.

Decades ago there was one spot inside for these two cars (1349/1362).
1362 was in the better condition (roof), so it stayed outside and in now essentially gone :-(
The restoration of 1349 was basically done by one person, no longer at the museum. Wheel re-profiling kept it out of service.
As luck would have it we were using out wheel lathe on New Orleans 850 and a couple of other cars. 1349's wheels were done too.
I've operated both serviceable El cars, 1227 & 1349, but Hurricane Sandy has put them out of service again.

Truck what to where?

Folks seem to forget that Subway Tunnel ceilings are rather low. A car like 1362 may not clear the overhead in some spots. There was a reason for chopping the roofs of the Q Cars.

And no, I wouldn't want to keep this BU stored outdoors. It has been abused by the salt air for eons --- enough of that.

Wouldn't want 1362 to get a "trim" by running in the underground!

Unfortunately the roof would be compromised. I would think they could preserve the original roof for historical reasons, unless it's pretty much trashed already.

One of the reasons the Q’s roofs had to be lowered was because they rode higher on the IRT Composite trucks that were installed for 3 Av el use than they rode on their original trucks. When the Qs were transferred back to Myrtle in 1958, the TA chose to retain the Composite trucks rather than transfer the trucks from the BUS that were being scrapped.

Hello Rando ---

That story is an "old tale" and not accurate. BMT Wooden EL Cars (gate cars) could run thru the older BMT subway tunnels that were built to clear the one foot higher (than steel subway cars) EL Car roofs - just like the roofs of the BMT Tunnel from the Willy B Bridge to Delancey Street to Chambers Street.

If you look at the Q Types (photos of them in service) and more so the 3 car retro BU Gate cars --- NOTE that the end two Motor cars of the 3-car-consist use the IRT composite trucks, but the MIDDLE Trailer car still uses its original BU Peckham Truck. And NOTE that ALL car floors and anticlimbers line up evenly between the middle trailer car and the two end motor cars. So the Composite trucks did not make their cars higher than the middle trailer car on its original BMT trucks !!

The Q's ran on Myrtle from May 1958 with their high clerestory roofs thru the early 1960's retaining their high roofs. It was in the very early 1960's that all the Q's had their roofs lowered in gradual consists over about 2 years, until the whole fleet was done.

If I recall correctly, there was major tunnel and routing work at the BMT Dekalb St Subway Station and massive junction area -(was it the late 1950's - very early 1960's ?) - and in this major new tunnel work something new was built (a new overhead tower perhaps, I don't recall what exactly now) that caused the newer rebuilt tunnel roofs to be rebuilt lower to the rails so they thus then only cleared steel subway car roofs. I was told decades ago that the Dekalb interlocking route was the way Myrtle EL gate cars got to Coney island - including the Q types when they went to Myrtle in May 1958. It was because of THAT new lower clearance at Dekalb station and junction rebuilding, that the Q's could no longer clear the tunnel roofs.

I would ask some of our BMT Historians still remaining here to jump in provide more extensive details about the nature of that massive Dekalb Junction and routing reconstruction.

Some parts went to 1349 as part of the rehab of that car.

Glad I was able to help a former project leader get that El Car rolling after many years.

Also, if you find and look at old photos of BMT EL Gate Cars (and 1300 series motor gate cars operating up to May 1958) on the BMT Myrtle Ave. EL, in shots taken from the center island wooden platforms on the ancient older lower Myrtle portion, you will note HOW MUCH HIGHER the end open platforms were located along the edge of the somewhat lower wooden-plank station platforms. Meaning you had to STEP UP about 2 inches onto the gate car end open-platforms to enter the EL car.

Also, Photos of BMT EL gate cars at the Park Row Station and Sands Street Station had and show the same height variance issue ! I do have photos of these situations which clearly show the height difference at these (and Myrtle) stations. So when the Q-types went to Myrtle in mid-1958, the A and C end motor cars having IRT Composite trucks, and the B trailer center car having its original BU Peckham trailer trucks (with it's 31' wheels) -- all cars sat at the same car to car floor and anticlimber height evenly. And thus, their side-entry-door floor-sills and the car floors were just as high and equally so, above the wooden station platforms, as were the end open-platforms and car floors as the BMT 1200, 1300 and 1400 motor gate cars (all having their original BMT Trucks) that operated the Myrtle EL line years before the Q's arrived in April-May 1958.
