The yellow S was extended to 34th Street peak hours. I thought it went to 42nd the rest of the time, but you mentioned in another post it went only to 57th in off peak hours.

I only saw R32s on that service.

I remember the 1995 Q through Montague service...

I think the 63rd Street Shuttle were extended to 34th Street-Herald Square station for a time. The 63rd Street Shuttle ran mostly R-32s.

I remember that. I was waiting at 57th/7th and the first (southbound) train to arrive was a shuttle bound for 34th. I think it was an 8-car train of R32s.

The portion of what will be know as the SAS from the BMT station at 57th &7th Avenue on G3 & G4 track is officially referred to as the Second Avenue Connector, since the actual route if the SAS is, well Second Avenue.

No different that the 11th Street cutoff, AKA BMT-IND connector between the BMT 60th Street under river tunnel and IND Queens Plaza in LIC, Queens.

But they should have compensated for the reduction of 72nd St by putting a pocket track north of 72 nd instead of a crossover. The pocket track could have been used as a crossover as well as a turnaround and a storage track.

Regardless of your meaning or intent, the subway is needed.
The Problem here,is it wont serve ENOUGH riders due to its lack of physical branches to other borough's..such as The Bronx(which should be obvious to all).

The route as designed kills capacity.

While the planned extension and service pattern to 125th St. and Lexington under Phase II does not include any new direct physical connection to existing branches (other than the Phase I connection of the Q down Second and then to Broadway)or to the other borough's, the current Phase II plan does calls currently call for two non-revenue tracks proceeding off of the revenue tracks that head for Lexington Avenue. These non-revenue tracks will continue down Second Avenue for a stint and can be used for layups and eventually in Phase IV or IX (in 20XX or 21XX)be connected to an underwater tunnel leading into the Bronx.

What's killing it is greed and corruption. Five BILLION dollars was enough to send it to 125th, and possibly connect to the Bronx. We have thousands of able bodied people in homeless shelters, for what the city pays to house them (more than you'd think) they could have dug a tunnel for the 2nd ave Lex-Bronx connector using hand and air tools.

Or the existing work could have been done in a less wasteful, less corrupt manner, but still with some 3rd cousins employed, some payoffs paid and other nods to current accepted practices.

Considering the vast power of modern equipment and the ability of semi-automated machinery to amplify a worker's reach and speed, the whole thing could have probably been done with a half the staff, in half the time, at half the depth under the street and with room for center tunnels for later use (2 tracks now, 2 more possible later).

I fully agree. This would be the first phase. Then it should be extended via the Park Avenue ROW to Fordham Plaza, where it would merge with a Fordham Road Line extension of the Eighth Avenue Line, before going via Pelham Parkway to Co-Op City.

The Queens Bypass should be built, and the Port Washington Branch should be transferred to subway service. A connection between the SAS and the 60th Street Tunnel should be provided.

A track connection to the Manhattan Bridge North Tracks should be provided for flexibility. At Eighth Street, a line should head east, crossing the East River and going under Grand Street, Bushwick Avenue, Stuyvesant Avenue, and Utica Avenue.

The main branch of SAS should go via Park Row before merging with the Nassau Street Line for a transfer to the Fulton Center, and then a new tunnel connection between Court Street on the Fourth Avenue Line, and the Fulton Local tracks would be built.

A station located there would not preclude tail tracks from being built.
To suggest it would is foolish.

The 1968 plan contained 4 extra tracks to store trains during off peak hours.
While it is well established that the line has altered from THAT plan, for the PRICE they are estimating(5.5 Billion for 3 stations, connecting tunnels between the old work and new structures).
Bottom line is,the price is far too costly so little work.

Indeed, the US arranges to squander money at horrendous rates while accomplishing little. I will say again that deep tunnel subways are a dumb idea--not only more expensive, but less useful for riders who waste time on long escalator rides to/from overly deep platforms.
