I believe, the original brake package on the WMATA care was also hydraulic and one experimental train of MTA R-44s also had hydraulic brakes. The failure cited indicates to me that a hydraulic brake system isn’t as safe as an electro pneumatic since in the even of a similar failure with air brakes, the air in the auxiliary reservoir would be able to enter the brake cylinders without having to be pumped by an outside source as is the case with hydraulic brakes. |

I don't even understand why this is the case, other than shitty design. Hell, my friend's deuce and a half has (sort of) air over hydraulic braking. Actually more like air assisted, but anyway, there's no reason a hydraulic brake should need a constant pumping and all to work - that's what accumulators are for. |

This has nothing to do with design, the car had a special rig for testing/training purposes. Someone kinked/shorted one of the rigged up wires laying inside the car which knocked out the APS and in the turn the pump. Once the accumulator was drained they had no brakes putting them into the kitty litter. Normally there would be dynamics until 5 mph, I don't know if they were functioning or not in this case.Hydraulics have been standard equipment on BART all along and are also used on most LRVs these days so it's not some sort of unproven technology. BART cars are among the lightest anywhere (100,000 pound maximum civil load if I recall) so they have all kinds of features to keep the weight down, hydraulic brakes being just one of them. Just guessing here - their concerns about weight may have caused them to minimize the size of the accumulator and instead rely more on the dynamics. |

"Ve at Bombardier are offended. From what the article said, they do but unlike an air reservoir it seems that some sort of pump is required to get the hydraulic fluid to the brake cylinder. |
