Cool photos indeed!! Slightly off-topic- but how did the cars get there? Barge from SBK yard? Or taken individually by flatbed truck, perhaps?

Kinda depressing a bit seeing all these cars I used to ride as a kid just tossed around like that. Had I known about this place when I was younger, would have loved to scavange around those old cars.

I was lucky enough to see AB's being scrapped at Avenue X while riding the Culver line in early summer '68.
Everyone there was working for the private contractor, one of them gave me a screwdriver, and I went and started scavenging. Got a pair of roll signs - one large and one small, and one of those little handles/ knobs to unlock/open the motorman's cab.

When being built, I remember they were critized for not their style, not fitting in, and for their boxiness, but eventually they became part of the NY skyline.

For me that was on one chilly winter night. I had gotten off the subway in the Prince St. neighborhood, or maybe west of that (don't quite remember). I was going out to hear music. I waa walking south, maybe on 7th ave. - and there they were. The twin towers at night, all windows lit, with the bulding's profile amidst the skyline. They were at home and belonged to New York.

The subway cars were scrapped in Greenville right next to the float bridges. They came over from Bush Terminal by barge. I know someone who worked the tug bringing them over and I went over to the yard a few times to take photos and scavenge roll signs and other bits. There were twisted up cars everywhere. Never saw any LIRR cars there though, I'm guessing that was somewhere else.

In California and maybe some other states there are automobile junkyards where you pay an entrance fee, and then can wander around and take whatever parts you want. Just imagine if this subway junkyard were still around and had a similar policy.

True. In the beginning they were criticized for being like two headstones, no archetectural value, so style, chrisma compaired to the other buildings with "style", etc. They ruined the skyline. Just ask anyone living in Brooklyn Heights in the day.

Now I miss them so much.

From the time they went up until the TV antennas were finally relocated from Empire to the North Tower, those towers totally screwed up TV reception throughout the city with severe ghosts on every channel. But once that was finally done, they became memorable instead of a curse. :)

If it weren't for Armstrong's monstrosity of an antenna near Montclair, NJ, many of them would have been off the air for a long time. The problem was most of the TV's (except for channel 2) abandoned Empire and the original multi-antenna was no longer. Because Armstrong's old FM antenna was still there in New Jersey, along with a few other repeater stations over in New Jersey, it was quite a disaster for the TV channels having all their eggs on top of that one basket. Here's an interesting background on what it took for them to light back up after 9/11 ...

The one question i'm thinking of is were any of those transmitters insured?? If so, some of the $$$ loses could be offset somewhat.

Some of my friends and I used to do that in the Bronx when the Lo-vs were being scrapped and at Sarnelli’s in Bkln when the multis and the early steels went. We would just walk in and whoever was in charge gave us free reign to take what we could carry.

I think the last few MP54's in 1975 had been sitting so long in Corona, they had to cut them up right there as they were too corroded to be road worthy just to get to the barge.
