What Do You Think Is The Cause of These Air Sounds From This B Train?

When I was going into the city, I noticed a pulsating air sound whenever the doors opened in a station. There was a delay up ahead along Central Park West, so I was able to record and check to see if the sound was coming from just my car.

Waddaya Think

Sounds like it might be a stuck release magnet somewhere in the train. with the Brake valve in full service or any position in the service range the application magnets would be applying straight air but a stuck release magnet would be trying to release the brakes so while the brakes are held on, the release magnet would be exhausting air but losing its battle with the application magnets through the entire train. Did the sound disappear when the brakes released and the train started to move?

Funny you should ask that. I waited in the station until the train pulled out and recorded about 3 minutes waiting for the train to move.

Go to 2:40 for the answer

Sounds to me like a "runaway" compressor. Compressor keeps compressing to the point that a safety valve will kick in to release intermittantly the added pressure from the air tanks. Without that, the tanks could explode.

I thought that at first, but looking at the video the sound gradually abates as the brakes are released and disappears completely when the brakes are fully released and the train starts moving. That leads me to my firs conclusion that it was a stuck release magnet. Anyone out there from CED or an RTO TSS who can provide more accuracy?

Maybe there were two too many cars on this 10-car R68 train? (Sorry, I had to).
