Might anyone know when the slogan "Ride the Open-Air Elevated" began to be painted on stations or cars? I question whether the Interborough subway system caused a drop in Interborough el patronage and how soon the IRT had to react by coaxing people to ride the el. Thank you. |

Well, according to a number of books I've read on the subject, that was John Hylan's intention all along in building the IND. He wanted to build a modern, spacious underground system that directly competed with the elevateds, hoping that given the choice, the paying rider would choose the IND.Unfortunately, this cost the City the chance to actually expand the subways to places no subway had ever seen, such as northern and eastern Queens and southeast Brooklyn. |

Thank you.Joe: The "Open-Air Elevated" campaign began sometime in the mid twenties. So many people were riding the subway trains that they were over crowded and the company sorts way to divert some of the patronage back to the els. Several cars were repainted in various colors but the scheme that they settled on was an orange car body with a black roof They carried the slogan "Open Air Line". The slogan was applied to several stations as well. Unfortunately the orange paint didn't fare well and by 1928-30 all the cars had been repainted. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

If the system had been built according to need rather than Hylan's vanity, priority would've been given to reaching unserved areas- which remain unserved to this very day.The only exception was the Queens Blvd line. |

Ground for the 6th Ave subway was broken on March 23rd, 1936. Because of the logistical problems, it cost $57 million, for just the section between West 4th St and 53rd St. Had LaGuardia not bought out the IRT and BMT, the IND might have been expanded more. |

The "Ride The Open Air Line' campaign began on April 24th, 1923, according to Stan Fischler's book, "Uptown/Downtown". There certainly was a drop in elevated patronage, after the 1918 opening of the IRT's 7th Ave-B'way and Lexington Ave subways in 1918. Around the same time, the "Elevated Express" posters began to appear, extolling people to use the els. This followed a 1921-22 reorganization of the IRT's Board of Directors, which added three prominent civilians to the Board. |

That's the first I learned of that marketing campaign. Of course, in the pre-internet days, I didn't realize that wasn't actually Brighton Beach. Also, I was, at the time, unfamiliar with Brighton Beach (still am, actually) and Ridgewood (where I spent a lot of time from 2006-2014). |
