Might anyone know when the slogan "Ride the Open-Air Elevated" began to be painted on stations or cars? I question whether the Interborough subway system caused a drop in Interborough el patronage and how soon the IRT had to react by coaxing people to ride the el. Thank you.

Joe: The "Open-Air Elevated" campaign began sometime in the mid twenties. So many people were riding the subway trains that they were over crowded and the company sorts way to divert some of the patronage back to the els. Several cars were repainted in various colors but the scheme that they settled on was an orange car body with a black roof They carried the slogan "Open Air Line". The slogan was applied to several stations as well. Unfortunately the orange paint didn't fare well and by 1928-30 all the cars had been repainted.
