Isn't there at present some underuse of R68As? I seem to have gotten that impression looking at the JoeKorner website. If that is the case, the shortage might not be as bad. Also, perhaps they can do some intense maintenance to get a higher percentage of R32s on the road for the morning rush. Even with all this, though, there would still be a pinch to have enough cars on the road for the morning rush, as you indicate.

Politically easier to slash service elsewhere.

Also, if anything goes wrong anywhere in Queens on the N/Q/R, they need to be able to turn trains coming from the south at 57th Street. I've seen that happen on multiple occasions.

I doubt that! I think Wall St-bound riders will stick with the 4 and 5 trains after the Q is extended there. The 4 and 5 have a more direct route to Wall St, whereas the Q goes west before it goes back east. And then you have to transfer if you need to get to Wall St. The Q will be better for riders headed to Times Square or Herald Square or the Canyon of Office Towers on 6th Ave in the 40's and 50's.

You MAX out Astoria with (R) trains. So what if 95th street doe not need that many. The (R) needs a place to tern around, and where name you a place to do that. Sometimes a train must run almost empty to get to a place where it may tern. No big deal that.

Same with 9th/36 YOU say it does not need that much service, but the (W) does need a place to tern around, and that is best since it is not in the way of any other service. (W) will have the Lower Level to itself. No Problem there.

As LION said we do not run trains for the convenience of the passengers, but rather for the convenience of the railroad. There are Convenient places to tern trains. And half of the (W) will sort tern at Whitehall. so only alt trains will venture on to 9/36.

LION knows what him is doing even if the MTA does not.

Well, then, according to the timetable for inaugurating the 2nd Av. stubway, they'd better get going with the SMS because they got a little less than a year to get those R32s in better shape. I've just looked at the JoeKorner website. Seems that there are ordinarily only 152 out of the 200 R68As on the roster for the morning rush. That's 76%, pretty low usage, not much more than the percentage usage of the surviving R32s. I wonder why.

I propose running the (Q) and the (N) to 96th Street / Second Avenue.
These trains already *HAVE* their equipment.

I propose running the (R) train to Astoria with as much equipment as can be mustered. Even if it has no new terminals, they *can* layup equipment at 9/36 at night, can run them to CI for major maint, and can lay up equipment in the tunnels south of 59th street if necessary.

If necessary every 3rd R can short tern at Whitehall, that will increase equipment availabliity. Run some (R) trains with 8 cars and ewe can short tern at Canal.

Heck run ALL of the (R) trains with 8 cars... That will increase the frequency until more cars can be purchased.

(R) Astoria to Ft. Ham
(RW) Astoria to Whitehall
(R) Astoria to Ft. Ham
(RN) Astoria to 9/36 Because every other train cannot terminate at Whitehall without delaying the line (As demonstrated when the (W) terminated there.)

Repeat!

If austerity it is, 8 car (R) trains with the best possible frequency to Astoria will have to do it.

You see that the LION left out BMT on the Queensboro.

Maybe a 6 car shuttle [call it the (BS) if you like] can run from Continental to Canal LL maybe 6 tph. Still then the mbere with the (R) could be an issue.

LION said not about slashing service south of 59!

YOUSE GUYS said they needed not the levels of service that I had proposed. YOUSE GUYS said if I max out the (R) to Astoria, Ft. Ham does not knead that much service.

LION keeps Ft. Ham at current levels, but additional levels of service will not go to the Ham.

Now if Ham *does* knead better levels of service and that would be appropriate for the bus changers, they do not want to know about whic (R) to tahe, they just want to take the first (R) and go home.

All well and good. But then ewe cannot complain to me that Ft. Ham. gets too much service.

LION *would* tun the (R) line maxed out; LION would build a terminal at the Con Ed Plant in Queens, and LION woudl buy mor equipment, as it is clearly kneaded.

But ewe also asked the LION about plans for austerity, with no new cap bdgts... LION gave that answer too.

Here is another refinement. Cut the (Q) and the (N) by 1 tph, and increase the (R) by 2 tph. Shor tern some (R) at Whitehall is more tph is required at Astoria. The bridge beese riders will just have to manage under this austerity untill more can be purchased.

Why do you claim that dispatchers are lazy or that they need the system 'dumbed down"?

The minutes say "the R32 fleet." That sounds like all of them.

That's not his position. He's restating Lion's position.

Then the R211 car order should be increased from 940 because the R32 cars will probably be retired along with the R46 cars.

The only question is how many R32 cars will remain in service after the R179 are all in service?

Italianstallion's reading of MTA minutes indicates all 222.

A lot of the 68As are on the G line which only uses 4 cars.. maybe that effects the 68As spare factor.

From a previous message:

"It is not possible to relay at 36th and maintain normal service."

Of course it is POSSIBLE to terminate a train at the 36th Street-Fourth Avenue station. The train operators and conductors simply announce that 36th Street is the last station, the passengers leave the train, the train is then routed via the West End line to the switch area near 9th Avenue where it reverses and returns to the ststion, or down the center track to Coney Island train yards. Or the trains simply layup on the express tracks out of service - because the express tracks themselves are out of service. This kind of operation has been done for years or decades on the various lines.

While the phrase, the "blank train" terminates AT a certain station usually means that there track switches and possibly layup tracks for that operation - that is not always the case. The G-train "terminated" for decades "at" the Smith-9th Street station, but every body damn well knows that those G-trains rode all of the way to the Fourth Avenue station and actually relayed on the express tracks there.

Wildebeests do not argue with LIONS!

Keep your fingers off of the interlocking levers and the railroad will run much faster and more smoothly.

Virtually every weekday you see at least 1 R68/R68A on the N. If you look at the assignment sheets, there are to be NO old tech trains on the N. Therefore the R68/68A's are pinch hitting for the shortage of R160's so there are actually fewer old techs in the yard.

My point is that it isn't possible to terminate trains at 36th street. Too many trains to take trains out of service there without severely delaying the other lines.
