Fun fact: There have been thousands of studies of acupuncture.Collectively, they prove it's a complete sham with no effect whatsoever. However, there have been so many studies done that some of them show acupuncture as being effective by chance alone. After all, if you compare Treatment X with a placebo, even if Treatment X is completely ineffective, there is a small chance that the experimental group will do better than the placebo group by random chance. In a well-designed experiment, the odds of such a fluke are low— but if you repeat the experiment enough times, those low chances add up. Because acupuncture is so over-studied, you can easily find one or two studies which contain such a fluke to "prove" it's effective even though it clearly isn't. |

Placebos don't work— that's sort of the point.You use a placebo which you know doesn't work to control for biases, such as people changing their habits because they're in an experiment or people reporting improvement of subjective symptoms to meet perceived expectations that they "should" be getting better or experimenters judging subjective symptoms based on their own belief that the treatment "should" be working, or some aspect of the experimental procedure creating a confounding variable (eg, the extensive monitoring of test subjects has an effect on their condition independent of the thing being studied). |

If I was really interested in this subject which I am not, I would spend the time to do real research. |

I once had sciatica for three months and underwent no treatment. The next time I had it, I underwent acupuncture and the scatica went away in two months, so I believe it did help somewhat. Also, when I asked the therapist how many visits it will take, she said 12. and the pain did go away after 12 visits. So I don't believe it is a sham. |
