Placebos don't work— that's sort of the point.You use a placebo which you know doesn't work to control for biases, such as people changing their habits because they're in an experiment or people reporting improvement of subjective symptoms to meet perceived expectations that they "should" be getting better or experimenters judging subjective symptoms based on their own belief that the treatment "should" be working, or some aspect of the experimental procedure creating a confounding variable (eg, the extensive monitoring of test subjects has an effect on their condition independent of the thing being studied). |
