But the objective was to move the trains out as fast as possible in rush hour and the announcements used to take time. I'd make the announcements on the way into the station so folks had a chance to decide if they wanted to get off at the next stop. |

Not needed in every city, but in NYC the next stop announcement is good at a station, especially because of "DeKalb" and similar situations. Information about the coming stop such as transfers should always be done while in motion IMO.London Underground is strange; they announce the info about the next stop while in motion but then they do it again once the doors open, which is really a waste of time. By the time they announce the train's destination the doors are practically ready to close or closed in some cases. And there's a delay before the announcements start after the doors open, much like LIRR. In general the NTT announcements in NYC are good but think it best to announce the next stop immediately on departure from the previous one to give people time to process the information and check a map or whatever. |

Conductors are kinda busy fumbling with the doors and watching the platforms - expecting them to concentrate on something else such as announcements at stations whilst busy with that only delays the trains.Rule number one of the railroad: "Keep it moving, step lively." |

One timer that IMO should be is right before the 90 degree curve on the Flushing bound #7 entering QBP. Ive been on trains where the T/O goes up the hill with a big green ball from Court House Sq "wrapped around" & slams on the brakes right before or going into the curve with noticeable G forces felt by the clientele. Its a wonder that there was never (AFAIK) a major accident there.Meantime, Manhattan bound from QBP to Court Square, they put in timers that have the train slow down to 5MPH midway & 5MPH right before the station. And thats on level track! Go figure. |
