Not needed in every city, but in NYC the next stop announcement is good at a station, especially because of "DeKalb" and similar situations. Information about the coming stop such as transfers should always be done while in motion IMO.

London Underground is strange; they announce the info about the next stop while in motion but then they do it again once the doors open, which is really a waste of time. By the time they announce the train's destination the doors are practically ready to close or closed in some cases. And there's a delay before the announcements start after the doors open, much like LIRR.

In general the NTT announcements in NYC are good but think it best to announce the next stop immediately on departure from the previous one to give people time to process the information and check a map or whatever.
