Here's a picture in full sun of the car's new paint.

The end route sign must have come from an R27 - 38.

I hope that the car will be repainted into its original color of olive drab called in the contract books “subway green."

R4 825 is already green. Being that the R16 is at the front of the museum yard we wanted a more striking livery that's more noticable from the street.

The car still looks great regardless. Hats off to everyone involved.

Glad to see Harry and Erik finally got the help they were looking for.

A couple of coats of Imron/clear coat would do wonders. Probably no money for that.

There are still some flaws in the exterior steel that should be fixed before going to an expensive coating like that. Meanwhile it will look good for a while.

It may be more noticeable bur it is not historically accurate. At the very least, if you want it to be noticeable, you could paint it in the tartar red paint scheme that it got in 1968 just prior to receiving the “Ronan” paint scheme.

I don't remember them in true olive drab, only the dirty brown it quickly turned into and stayed that way until painted bright red while on the RR.

I do like fantasy, what-if paint schemes though. Since they spent most of their life on the Eastern Division, the BMT Queens blue/orange scheme would look interesting on them, as with the Q's, such as an orange stripe along the top of the side and orange end doors.

However, the Queens Division of the BMT which included the Astoria and Flushing Lines was part of the Southern Division not the Eastern. The so called “dirty brown” you observed was merely what the olive drab became when covered with steel dust. It was the same color as the R-21 through 30 (excluding the R-29s). For whatever reason while the R-16s were painted love drab, their sister care the IRT R-17s were painted in a maroon color which was not repeated with the R-21s through 28.

But several Q's got the scheme put back on for the 1964 Worlds Fair, although assigned to the Myrtle.

What was the origin of those two colors ?

There was only one Q unit that got the orange and blue paint scheme and it was specifically for a Queens day celebration. The cars were then transferred back to Myrtle for the rest of their service life. The reason for the colors is that they are the official NY state and NY City colors and the cars were originally painted in that scheme for the 1939 World’s Fair.

Mets took on their colors for 2 reasons. One was that they are the colors of NYC and the other is that since they were sort of a replacement for both the NY Giants and the Bkln Dodgers, the orange of the Mets logo on the caps was reminiscent of the Giants and the blue was a tribute to the Dodgers.

I operated that unit when I was a M/M on there Myrtle el in the summer of 1969. By the way, some of the Qs had the colors reversed with the main car body color as orange and the trim being blue

Correct, for those here that do know, the reversed color scheme on some Q's appeared at the time of the 1939-40 World's Fair.

Thanks for posting this wonderful portrait view. It's a shame they didn't keep the entire set together, for future trip use; and choose one other retired Q-unit (three cars) for their BU gate car rebuild.

Thanks for the info. about the reverse blue & orange livery during the 1939-40 Worlds Fair. Didn't know this. Before my time by about 10-11 years.
