However, the Queens Division of the BMT which included the Astoria and Flushing Lines was part of the Southern Division not the Eastern. The so called “dirty brown” you observed was merely what the olive drab became when covered with steel dust. It was the same color as the R-21 through 30 (excluding the R-29s). For whatever reason while the R-16s were painted love drab, their sister care the IRT R-17s were painted in a maroon color which was not repeated with the R-21s through 28.
