Tuscarora Almanac - November 26, 1904 - The Book of First Runs

The IRT West Farms Line is opened between Jackson Avenue and a temporary station at 180th Street- Bronx Park. Also opened is the two track Westchester Avenue Line (also called the Westchester Avenue Connection) which connects the 3rd Avenue El at 149th Street with the Contract I West Farms elevated line at Jackson Avenue. Since the subway is not yet complete 2nd and 3rd Avenue El trains will provide service.

Stations are opened at Jackson Avenue, Prospect Avenue, Simpson Street, Freeman Street, East 174th Street, East Tremont Avenue and a temporary station at 180th Street - Bronx Park (Boston Road).

Intervale Avenue - 163rd Street Station will open on April 30, 1910.
The temporary station at 180th Street was replaced by a permanent one on October 28, 1910.

Thanks as always for these anniversary dates.
This is one more thing to keep in mind when searching for early IRT photos - view of the temporary station at E.180th St. Any construction photos which may exist of construction of the permanent Bronx Park station between 1904 and its opening in 1910.

Also - any construction photos for the Intervale Ave. station.

Stef:
The structure ended at 181st Street. The IRT had planned to build a large terminal at 182nd Street and Boston Road. The zoo authorities objected to a busy rail terminal right at the park’s southern border. (182nd Street / Bronx Park South). The IRT then constructed a temporary terminal called 180st Street – Bronx Park. It was a two track station with a single island platform. It opened on November 26, 1904 and was replaced by a permanent station on October 28, 1910. The permanent station had two tracks as well as a single island and two side platforms.

The zoo feared that the IRT might be extended along Boston Road to Bronxdale. This would have been the logical route for the subway to take. Due to the zoo’s opposition to this route the White Plains Road Line makes a sharp turn to the east just north of East Tremont Avenue Station to East 180th Street – Morris Park Avenue Station.

Was the temporary station at the site of the permanent station or elsewhere?
