People from L.I. city and Greenpoint, would have had to ride only a few stops north or south, then change to a city bound train at S. 4th St.* for a short ride into lower Manhattan; at the first city stop, they could have transferred to a 2nd ave. exp. or local train, north or south.*if such easy accessibility to a city-bound transfer station had been the case, the "GG" might have become more patronized over the years, and, as a result, received better service than it does now. Most importantly, southeastern Queens would have gotten direct transit access to either the Queens Boulevard line, or (direct or by transfer) to the Fulton St. IND. |

Building the IND was a tremendously expensive project even for a city the size of New York. It pushed the city to its financial debt limit on more than one occasion; that is why it was expanded in sections after the original line from Chambers St. to 207th St. opened in 1932. It did expand somewhat in the postwar era by taking over parts of former BMT lines. It's unfortunate that service was never extended to Southeast Queens as was intended at one time leaving the residents of that area to rely on buses to reach the subway in Jamaica. |

I'd get nailed for deviating from the blue book of official announcements. Though one might not know it, the conductor gig is particularly difficult and challenging - you're in a uniform and have to be a cold professional at all times while watching out for so man many things. I was really glad to move up to motors and not have to do that anymore. :) |

Don't know the details, but I read that WPA money paid for part of it, when city(?) funds ran short.Also, I read that there was dishonesty in real estate evaluation for those properties either experiencing IND subway construction & loss of business or those who lost properties due to it. The figure I thought I read was $800 million paid out by the city for real estate, which the article (book?) said was about 3 times what the city should have paid. |

One of my M/M/Is once told our class about what happened to him one night when he was a M/M on the West End Line. He was operating a train of ABs and the riding was particularly heavy leaving Coney is. At around 25 Av, a passenger opened the cab door saw him sitting there and closed the cab door. A few more stops up the line, the passenger again opened the cab door, saw him still sitting there and closed the cab door again. A few more stations up the line, the passenger again opened the cab door saw the M/M still sitting there and asked him rather brusquely “Aren’t you finished yet?" |

The junction itself isn't really the cause of the timers between Atlantic and Franklin. Northbound 4 trains have a straight shot through the junction with no timers from Utica to Franklin, and Southbound 4 and 5 trains also have no timers at all from Atlantic to Franklin (Although admittedly you don't see too many trains going fast during rush hour)The only timers that are relevant to the junction are the ones right at the junction, and even then those are only for certain trains, not all. |

The Pelham 123 book describes the key as a “Drumstick” key which it totally wrong. The correct name for the device is a “drumSWITCH” key since it was originally used on the Hi -V MUDCs and the Lo-Vs to unlock the drum switches. When the B of T ordered the R-12s and up, the original cab door keys and drumswitch keys were retained rather than changing over to the IND style key which was eventually done with the R-62s. The original skate keys were used on the R-40s and up until what passes for MTA planners and designers came up with the current “Vapor” key named for one of the door manufacturers. It was the first time that the BMT and IND had 2 different types of keys since the iND originally only had one key that was used for storm doors, cab doors and door controls. Logically, there was no reason for the “Vapor” key since the existing IND key would have functioned just as well but somebody rammed it down the throats of the so called MTA management. |

The drumswitch key is the one used to unlock the faucet handles. It has a curve the opposite of the IND key which is a combination door key and drumswitch key. The door key on an IRT car is a straight key like the old Woolworth skeleton keys. |
