On a semi-related note, on this, the 142nd day of March 2015, the elevator connecting the street level and mezzanine of the 61st Street-Woodside station, and Platform A of the LIRR Woodside station, returns to operation.

Excellent! I'll celebrate by being in Portland for the opening of the Orange Line MAX to Milwaukie (Clackamas County), over the new Tilikum Crossing Bridge.

New York could learn from Portland, which not only sets realistic schedules for its rail projects, but also brings them in on time and under budget.

I think they usually do these on Sundays because Sunday is technically the start of the calendar week (I know for a lot of what I do it's based on the seven-day week being Sunday-Saturday). Also, doing it on 9/13 will give the new station THREE DAYS before it gets tested for full use since the two days after (Monday 9/14 and Tuesday 9/15) are Rosh Hashanah.

What’s interesting about the suggestion to open on 9/11 is that many years age each division had a different starting date for its payroll week and the IRT’s was Friday. Under that system 9/11 would have been the date for the start of the new pick and the opening of the new extension. Actually, the extension could be open the Sunday before with trains discharging passengers at T/Sq, running light to 34/Hudson and opening to the public on 9/11.

Rosh Hashanah is not a holiday for subway service purposes. It will see full train usage on Monday.

The station will most likely see limited ridership numbers until the towers start to open, outside of major Javits events. (I can just see a sea of Cosplayers en-route to NY Comicon on the 7)

What I meant was, it would not see a full passenger strain until Wednesday 9/16 because of Rosh Hashanah. Obviously, those are normal weekdays for train purposes but ridership is lower because of many people who observe the start of the Jewish New Year.

Yes, but doing that there would be pressure to open it earlier (and I mean two weeks earlier on August 30) so that it would be open ahead of the start of the US Open Tennis Championships on August 31 (this year, for the first time since 2007 the tournament barring weather issues will end on Sunday 9/13).

Jewish population is estimated at close to a million, but a large part of that number are not considered "observant". That is not especially relevant to these holidays, even those who are not regular worshippers often attend services. Ever been to a church on Christmas or Easter? Looks pretty different than a typical Sunday. Even quieter for daily services. The fact that many businesses are closed, and schools are closed, takes a great number of people off the systems regardless of their religious affiliation. Many people who are not observant in almost any aspect of Judaism will take off from work for any number of reasons.

I had a few Jewish friends who probably never saw the inside of a synagogue but when it came to Passover and the High Holidays, they did observe. It’s the same with many of us Christians. Many of us don’t go near a church except on Christmas and Good Friday/Easter.

You forget that public and many private schools are closed that Monday and Tuesday (I believe only Catholic schools are open those days). That by itself eliminates a LARGE chunk of traffic, especially at morning rush hour those two days (and also Yom Kippur, Sept. 23).

This has to be a tricky start to the school year in NYC because you have Labor Day on it's latest possible date, the 9/11 anniversary at the other end of the week and Rosh Hashanah the following Monday.

let's put it this way. Wallyhorse is insisting that due to the Jewish holidays, the station will see lower traffic.

My point is 34th street/11th is not near enough to large, consistent, traffic generation in general at the moment, and that how much effect could anyone's holiday have on that fact?

Wally's assertion is they have three days before full traffic, mine is that have a good two to three YEARS.

He has some common sense, as evidenced by his correct understanding of how the Jewish holidays affect subway ridership. YOU don't understand that. What Wally has trouble with is applying that correct understanding to any practical purpose.

go eat a ham and cheese sandwich, ya asshat...
Listen you anti-Semitic fucktard: you're completely wrong about everything in this subthread.

1. There are way more Jews observing Rosh Hashanah than you think, and apparently way more Jews that make up the weekday daytime population of Manhattan than you think.
2. Population counts, transit ridership counts, and transit ridership patterns will be much different than on a normal non-federal holiday weekday.
3. There are plenty of people who may otherwise use the new 7 station but won't because of Rosh Hashanah.
4. There are plenty of people who may otherwise use the new 7 station but won't because of Rosh Hashanah.

Seeing as you are stumped on 3 and 4, I'll give you an example: B&H.
