Runaway rail car kicked loose by teen hits New York station

UTICA, N.Y. (AP) — Video surveillance footage released Friday shows a rail car that was accidentally set in motion by a 13-year-old boy ramming an antique locomotive into a train station, sending passengers waiting for a train scrambling for safety.

Oneida County officials released the footage as they called on federal rail regulators to explain how a 265,000-pound rail car left unattended for two weeks could be unlatched by a teenager playing on the car, according to the account of the July 21 accident that the teen gave to Utica police.

"I understand that the Federal Railroad Administration has concluded that proper procedure was followed," County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. said. "That is astounding."

Video cameras at Utica's Union Station show the New York, Susquehanna and Western freight car barreling down on the county-owned facility during the evening rush. Seconds later, a camera on the station platform shows the car hitting the 100-year-old locomotive and ramming it through a station wall.

Passengers milling about the platform while waiting for an Amtrak train dash for safety as a cloud of dust overtakes them. The Amtrak train arrived minutes later and departed soon after.

Police said the teenager told them he accidentally kicked the rail car's latch while playing on it, causing it to break loose and travel than more a mile through Utica, in central New York. A video camera facing away from the station shows the car rolling past three people walking along the tracks. Seconds later, the rail car hits a vehicle, slightly injuring the driver, before slamming into the locomotive.

The locomotive and rail car won't be removed until Monday. County officials estimated the repair costs from the accident will top $1 million.

"There was significant danger to our citizens, and there is significant damage to our train station, and someone is responsible and it isn't the taxpayers of Oneida County," Picente said.

In response to Picente's questioning of safety procedures for unattended rail cars, the Federal Railroad Administration helped investigate the accident and said its inspector found "no indications that the train crew that delivered the train car to the private company violated any federal securement regulations in this incident."

A message left with the Cooperstown, New York-based NYS&W wasn't immediate returned.

This story has been corrected to show the footage was released Friday, not Thursday.

Randyo, Randyo, Randyo.

First of all, the "500" number that you refer to does not describe "how far back" you can go. It only describes how many posts you see on each "page". No matter what your "Number of posts per page" number is set to you can still "go back" just as far, via the SubChat Message Index Display Configuration

Second of all, just because an original thread is older than your SubChat Message Index Display Configuration, that doesn't mean it is inaccessible. In fact, finding old threads via the Message Index is terribly inefficient and annoying. The much preferred method is to search for old threads using Google.

In conclusion, we find that an original thread's age is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE for starting a whole new thread when you know darn well that the original thread exists.

To prove my point, I shall find the original thread for you. Here it is: Runaway railcar crashes into vehicles, steam loco, damages Utica Union Station (1360392)

It took me about 2 seconds, and 0.5 seconds of that was spent waiting for Google to produce the results.

Picente should just shut up. Just blame the railroad for the kid's stupidity. What an idiot. If the car and locomotive were both properly secured (which apparently they were, according to the FRA), then the responsibility clearly lies with the offender. How many laws did that kid break? Trespassing? Tampering with rail equipment? Oh no, we can't lay the blame on one of his precious taxpayers. Barring the county suing the offender's family, and if the railroad is not negligent, the county is then be responsible for its own property.

As far as Picente questioning the FRA's conclusions, I would trust the FRA much more so than some stupid local politician who's only trying to maintain his political position.

Video surveillance footage released Friday shows a rail car that was accidentally set in motion by a 13-year-old boy ramming an antique locomotive into a train station, sending passengers waiting for a train scrambling for safety.

.
.
.

Video cameras at Utica's Union Station show the New York, Susquehanna and Western freight car barreling down on the county-owned facility during the evening rush. Seconds later, a camera on the station platform shows the car hitting the 100-year-old locomotive and ramming it through a station wall.

That first sentence needs to be restructured. It produces the thought that:
1. A 13-year-old boy is at the controls of an antique locomotive.
2. This boy rammed said locomotive into a train station, the force of the impact causing the rail car to move.
3. This runaway rail car caused passengers waiting for a train to scramble for safety.

The other paragraph included in the above quote shows this was not the case.

Proposed edit:

Video surveillance footage released Friday shows a rail car, accidentally set in motion by a 13-year-old boy, ramming an antique locomotive into a train station, causing passengers waiting for a train to scramble for safety.

Nah. If the story had been written by a typical SubChatter, it would look something like this:

"A violent inner-city youth caused over $1 million in damage to a local train station today, while vandalizing a freight car. The unidentified "teen" set the car rolling over a mile to the station, where it barreled into a steam locomotive on display there, as terrified, law-abiding travelers ran for their lives. Officials questioned whether current liberal attitudes towards child-rearing that allowed this unsupervised, suspected gang member to jeopardize the public, precipitated this potentially deadly incident."

Tell me I'm wrong...LOL!

JayZee is doing exactly what he gets paid to do, represent an audience that pays the advertisers money to see more of his thing. I whored out for years in radio and in television. He and I both have no pretenses about what it takes to reel them in and come back tomorrow to do another show. And get paid. :)

Still is ... just not one that you identify with. No worries, there's always Garner Ted Armstrong. :)

The internet pretty much destroyed "mass media" and journalism. Once upon a time, there were only a few channels, and the majority of Americans all watched the same thing, or listened to the same radio network. THAT gave Americans something in COMMON, something that could be a SHARED EXPERIENCE, something that they could gather around and discuss the next morning over the water cooler.

Now, we're all divided into small groups in separate echo chambers where if you don't like what the preacher is selling, there's another cube just down the hall that might be more to your liking.

Once upon a time, America was a UNITED States. Now we're all splintered up and throwing pies at one another. THAT is what is wrong with this country, we have nothing in common with one another thanks to the dividers. Keeps us from choking some banksters and the "powers that be" as long as we fight each other instead of those who are stealing YOUR future. :(

Same reason why bingbong and I do. First, it's fun and you know how to take a joke, secondly, you're spouting a good amount of misinformation. Reporters tend to react to that. I've personally gotten tired of bothering, but JayZee is still at bat. Shortstop is all lined up. And here's the pitch ... :)
