Chicago's CTA Opens Intermodal Facility To Ship Cars |
|
Posted by ChicagoPCCLCars on Thu Jul 30 18:12:13 2015 With its Yellow line closed and not scheduled to be opened by October, it not by November, the CTA had to get a way to ship new rail cars onto active rails and delivery old rail cars for scrapping or for rehab. The 63rd St. lower yard won-out over other locations. A siding there proved to be the easiest to set up. So far, only one highway trailer has been used daily.A new Bombardier 5000 series approaches the main gate at 63rd St. lower yard. A 5000 series car awaits the Shuttlewagon to pull it off. So far, six cars have been delivered, four are mated in married pairs. Return travel trips allow cars to be scrapped or rehabs to be sent to Skokie Shops. CTA painted the criminal art work. |

Yep ... that's also how they've been getting from upstate New York to Chicago as well. Every few days, another new one goes by my house. |

Not only passenger cars but maintenance types like this sewer vacuum on a flat car needed shipping. Evidently the Chicago's subways needed cleaning that they weren't getting with the Skokie Shops isolated. So Thursday's load put passenger rail cars on hold. |

And I was at the International Amphitheater on July 7 of that year. They used to hold Lithuanian Folk Dance Festivals at the amphitheater; I danced in a few of those there. I think they learned their lesson after the first song festival in 1956. It was held at the old Coliseum, which did not have air conditioning, and on the day of the festival, the temperature soared to 103 degrees. After that, they booked the amphitheater, which was air conditioned. |

I used to think that when I first moved to NYC in 66. Today, I am mostly pleased that trains are crowded. When I ride CTA, I tyry to find a bench near the doors for ease of exit. While I miss the railfan seat of my youth, it is basic transport. |

When the oldest Budd CTA cars were being overhauled here in Bkln at the Bkln Army Terminal, I would see a few of them lined up on the Staten Island side of the Verrazano/Narrows Bridge waiting until after midnight when the upper level would be closed to traffic so that the cars could be flatbedded across the bridge to Bkln and regular traffic diverted to the lower level.. |

If you look closely at the front sign, you can see the A outline. Back in the days of A-B skip-stop service, North-South A trains had a red sign while B trains had a green Jackson Park-Howard sign. The A was encased in a triangle while the B had a square around it. Since Bryn Mawr was an AB stop, we could take either train to the Loop. |

VMT are down, the millenials are not buying cars or even getting driving licenses, and transit use is up. As a geezer, I am often offered a seat on a crowded BART train; if I'm only goinga few stops, I don't bother. The solution to the issue is of course more frequent and longer trains. In the CTA case, it is too bad the Ravenswood Branch stations weren't lengthened for 10 car trains when they did the rehab/ADA work. On the North-South through Route, the Wilson station should be 10 ready when done, IINM, Fullerton and Belmont were designedto be easily lengthened. The once longest platform in the world is long enough despite the Daley vandalism. Platforms in the Dan Ryan median should be easy. the hard ones will be Harrison, Roosevelt, and the four north of the river. Then of course, CTA should 1, restore A-B service , and 2, see if they can return to the tight headways ofthe 50s/60s. Just dreamin' I suppose, but it would make service better. |
