BMT Standards: questions about folding seats and door controls |
|
Posted by Dyre Dan on Sat Jun 27 23:09:11 2015 I rode the BMT Standards and the Triplexes today out of Brighton Beach, my first time riding the Standards except for a one-stop ride (34 St. to 42 St.) when I was about 8. I was surprised by the folding seats on the Standards. In fact, I didn't realize at first that they were seats at all. I asked an MTA employee what all those "pipes" were near the doors. He explained that they were seats, and what I thought were pipes were actually their legs. Folding these seats down so they could be used (did the conductor do that, or just unlock them and leave folding them down to passengers?) would have blocked the doors they were next to, leaving only the center doors of the car available for use. So, during what hours would they have been used? Were these seats used throughout the cars' lifetime, or only in the early years?Which brings me to my other question, about the door controls. I looked at one of the door-control panels by the center doors, and there were buttons (or rather holes for buttons) marked "close end doors" and "close end side doors" for each side of the car. What is the difference? Did it have to do with those folding seats? The panels didn't control the "storm doors", did they? |

The folding or jump seats were intended for lighter traveled routes or for single car operation. To the best of my knowlege, they were never used in regular service. |

BMTLines gave you a link re the door controls. The fold up seats blocked one door of each side pair to provide extra seating during off-hours. These seats survived unused pretty much until the end of the Standards except for the cars rehabbed c.1960, which had them removed at that time. I saw them used once or twice from my early memory back to 1953 or so. But I suspect regular use ended as ridership declined after WWII. |

I rode the steel cars up until 1957 when I left NY and I don't ever recall seeing one of those seats put down.IIRC, several repaintings of the cars left so much paint on the seat leg mechanisms that they probably couldn't fold down if they wanted them to. The same thing could be said about the door control panels on the end cars of the three car sets (B or BX sets). Incidentally, sitting next to one of those folded up seats was one of best seats on the train if you were tired. Leaning against the vertical seat was very comfortable and one might even catch a few zzzz's on the trip home. |

When a seat was folded down, the door behind it would not open. It was cut out. Those cars were loaded with features which 100 years ago were state-of-the-art. |

Actually they weren't State of the Art,which is a distillation of Best Practices at any point in time. The BRT and BMT sought to advance the Art. |

My father (now deceased) grew up with those cars in the 1930's and 40's on the Myrtle Avenue Line (Forest Av), then on the Jamaica Line in the 1950's. He would tell me those tip up seats NEVER came down. |

Business as usual on arnines as well. Did that move myself hundreds of times in revenue, and as Murphy's law dictated it was usually the lead or tail car that refused to close up. Nothing to see here, you can return to your seat now until the next stop. :) |

That happened once on an R-42 Abbott at 42nd St. n/b. A passenger reached into the pocket and gave the door leaf a good tug when it wouldn't close. |

Yep ... anything gets caught in the rollers or the lube wears off and that door's gonna stick. A normal day on the MTA. :) |

The electrical stuff is pretty shot on those cars. You'd be surprised where the 600 runs right near the passengers though the door controls are low voltage 32v |

The ones on 2391 should certainly be functional since it is the master car for the unit. It’s the ones on 2390 and 2392 that are not. |

I couldn't tell which car that clip was filmed on where one of the crew pulled the lever under the seat to open the center doors. |
