Stony brook originally looked like that, St James of course does...Port Jeff or Northport also sound reasonable as the north shore line had stations like that.
Wyandanch also had a station that looked like that.

Nah, back in 1878 there weren't even gators living in that swamp land. :)

That whole area out there was once swamp, which apparently the IND builders quickly learned the hard way which is why they decided "screw it, we'll use that el instead." Heh.

The IND did NOT decide to use the el instead. The extension of the Pitkin Av subway farther east was designed to coexist with the connection to the Fulton St el. I have mentioned this In many posts on this subject often enough that most of copy should familiar with it. The original specs called for existing BMT signaling to be used past 80 (Hudson) St interlocking and the connection to the LIRR ROW was to be made from an extended subway infrastructure in the vicinity of Aqueduct..

From what I have read in the Brooklyn Eagle in the 1930's, the current conection to Liberty Ave had been planned to be recaptured as part of the IND subway. This would have been in addition to any new subway line eastbound, east of Euclid Ave.

edf40wrjww2msgDetail:detailStr
fiogf49gjkf0d
That’s correct. Prior to the adoption of the existing route, there were a couple of other proposals for the extension of the Fulton St subway easton Rockaway Av. One called for the subway to continue straight down Fulton St and connect to the Liberty Av structure from north of Liberty Av rather than from the south as it does now. Another had the el turning east directly under Liberty Av east of Penna Av and connecting to the Fulton structure straight on. The problem with that plan would have been that there was no good place to be able to construct a portal on Liberty Av itself and connect it to the portion of the Fulton El that was strong enough to support steel cars. Making a connection west of Chestnut St would have required the old Fulton El structure between Chestnut and 80 (Hudson) St to have been rebuilt to dual contract standards to match the eastern portion of the structure. As the city saw it, the most practical and economic way to extend the subway was to build it as it presently exists basically duplicating the route of the old Fulton El along Pitkin Av and building the portal and ramp along private property even if tit required condemnation proceedings.

The route to B'way-East NY station, via Fulton to Truxton (its present location) was done in 1930. The section would end at Jamaica/Alabama Aves. What also surprised me were the different plans to connect to Pitkin Ave from there, including private property condemnations and moving the present Liberty Ave station closer to Jamaica Ave.

If the route to Bway/ENY was done as early as 1930, then why was;t the station completed and opened the same time it opened to Rockaway Ave? It is known that by 1941 the platforms and station finish at ENY were completed but track and signals were not installed due to the war, but what would have been the excuse before then?
