That's the one. You were reunited with a long-lost friend that day. I still remember your routine as you got 1689 ready that morning..

Correct. As I understand it, the city purchased the entire NYW&B ROW from Harlem River all the way to the Bx city line. One of the reasons it was initially part of the IND was that it was purchased prior to unification and the IND was the only city operated subway at the time. Some of the original IND second system plans called for a new subway line not to far from the NYW&B ROW in the Bx to be connected to the SAS but after the city purchased the ROW, plans were altered to connect the SAS to the newly acquired Dyre Line instead. Those plans remained in place even through the fiscal crisis of the 1970s but since parts the former ROW infrastructure S/O E180 have been removed that is extremely unlikely to happen even if the SAS were eventually to reach the Bronx.

It seems that many of the vintage railcars that go to “trolley” museums all over the country these days are rapid transit cars rather than streetcars as the number of vintage trolleys diminishes. Eventually, if it hasn’t been done at some museums already, Boeing, Kinky Sharyo and Siemens LRVs will start to show at museums as they will become the new “vintage” railcars.

As the population ages out and is replaced by those who never saw any of the older gear in service and cannot relate to it, museums need to have things that are meaningful to their current visitors just to keep the funding coming in.

If you put those grime-covered glass balls underneath them and have little hammers bang them just before the train comes, it would be even more realistic. :-)

IMHO it deserves to be Eddie's car even though I understand Eddie doesn't go up there very often anymore. Never will forget his classic response as he watched me load my newly-bought IND signbox back in 1980: "He's building a subway car at home."

The lights were dimming as it was with W-3 out there on the other end of the line. That definitely would have bankrupted the museum and caused the overhead to burst into flame. :)

All RT Cars behave the same way, PCC, Northshore Car, etc.

When I was in all my glory at B.E.R.A. (back when I was excessively foaming), I used to do switching moves with the R17 between the barns and Avenue L in first point only. I didn't need to spike the power. The only time I had to bend that rule was to get a quick shot in series coming out of the loop. There was a slight grade at that location. "The Shot" was a momentary thing. No one from the office was screaming, Thankfully (RIP George B.!).

Definitely a whole other lifetime.

Respectfully,
Stef
