We can certainly see it was filmed on location (including Luna Park) so I think it would have been more economical to attempt a real car than build a mockup.

I'm checking the book "The Manhattan Els and The IRT" By Joseph Cunningham and Leonard DeHart and there is no listing for a car number 2734. The highest number of the two thousand series is 2159 which was a comopsite built in 1903-4.

Can anyone confirm this ?

Speedy was unusual for the day because it was mostly filmed on location in New York. Lloyd had a lot of clout in those days.

Right, but this book had the car roster of the Manhattan Elevated thru the IRT R-12 to 36.

The car in the film looked like a steel car and not a composite.

#2159 was also the highest 2000 series Composite in Roger Arcara's ELEVATED AND SUBWAY CARS OF THE INTERBOROUGH RAPID TRANSIT COMPANY. After #2159, the numbers jump to 3000.

The car appears to be a mock up but it is a very good one. The car is a mock up of a Hedley Hi-V which started with the number 3700 so the proper number for that car would have been 3734. Another indication that it is a mock up is that the plate signs read Coney Island and Express which a genuine Hi-V would not have displayed.

Also I seemed to notice in the crowd someone seated in a non-longitudinal seat facing either front or rear. (If that is a word)

If this book has the gray cover, check in the back where the car roster is.

See if you can spot a car number 2734.

A mockup pulling smoothly into a station? Why? The number is in IRT style and position; I suspect they used an unused number so the car couldn't be ID'd, like using those stupid 555- telephone numbers in movies.

As to the route signs, the train was supposed to be going to Coney Island, so mocking those up and hanging them is no big deal.

However, IRT trains did NOT go to Coney Island. If they wanted to show a train to Coney Island, the producers should have used the mock up of an AB or a D type.

Watch the video again, the interior part. There are people sitting facing front. IRT cars had longitudinal seating.

Don’t be too sure. Many old time New Yorkers were a lot more knowledgeable about the subway and its equipment the we would imagine. a fellow member of my American Legion post can still remember the marker lights of the various BMT routes he used to take. Many IRT passengers were also familiar with their respective markers so end signs were not really necessary for them. The IND was probably the first subway in NY where route signs in the form of letters and end destination signs took on some degree of importance even though the BMT had them first on some of its equipment.

(yeah yeah, they would had to use a time machine for that...)

Exactly, 2734 seen in the film was a convincing prop.
