Don’t be too sure. Many old time New Yorkers were a lot more knowledgeable about the subway and its equipment the we would imagine. a fellow member of my American Legion post can still remember the marker lights of the various BMT routes he used to take. Many IRT passengers were also familiar with their respective markers so end signs were not really necessary for them. The IND was probably the first subway in NY where route signs in the form of letters and end destination signs took on some degree of importance even though the BMT had them first on some of its equipment.
