Project 113 & The Reading and Northern ran 3 trips on Saturday March 28th with the CNJ 0-6-0 between Minersville & Schuylkill Haven PA. The steam engine did all the work & put on quite a show on the cold but dry day. The 16 mile round trip ran on the lower part of the Mine Hill & Schuylkill Haven Railroad, chartered in 1831. Philadelphia & Reading gained control in 1863 and formally merged the MH&SH into the Reading Company in 1925. Before we made our way to hard coal country a stop was made at the R&N shops & general offices in Port Clinton. The lineup from left to right…former Missouri Pacific, Union Pacific (nee MP), Lehigh Valley, Santa Fe & Grand Trunk Western power. As long as some idiot doesn’t blow it, the railroad is pretty fan friendly:

The consist of 7 ex-Lackawanna MU trailers, an ex-Pennsylvania RPO with machinery for HEP & RBMN bay window caboose #92847 ran in reverse from the Minersville starting point. Conductor Bill Brubeck stands guard on one of the backup moves:

We'll start our "chase" at the Schuylkill Haven end of the event. With 3 trips at about 20/25MPH alot can be accomplished. The first photo op is moving thru the east end of West Cressona yard:

Chasing along Railroad St. in W Cressona:

Then comes the curve that ends at the station. Reading & Northern 4-6-2 #425 is undergoing some work so the 113 ran solo with a GP39RN along just in case.:

After crossing PA Rt. 183 on a VERY low bridge a footbridge off Wilder St. behind Schuylkill Precast Concrete is next:

Beckville Rd. crossing is next:

The railroad becomes rather inacessable as the river cuts through Sharp Mountain with PA 901 high up on one side & the single track on the other side of the narrow valley. On the north side of the "pass" a river view crossing can be had with some rater rugged hiking:

There is a landscaping business that will allow access for this shot off 901...probably the best on the route:

This is where the former Tremont Branch leaves the MH&SH main at Westwood Junction. Plenty of parking with a footbridge to cross the river:

The line then ducks under US209 & crosses the river again. The entire route is on about a 15 feet per mile acending grade:

Up close at the Maple Ave. crossing a half mile from Minersville:

The end of the trip:

Turnout for all trips was excellent:

That was like a nice cool drink of water on a hot day, thanks for posting. I am a bus guy however, this was just as good as the best bus ride I have ever had, to see this today is what I feel the hobbies, bus or rail is all about. Thanks again!

I fail to understand the reasoning. Why can't they charge riders an additional $5 each to pay for a second crew to man the diesel and have the diesel follow BEHIND the train? Why does the diesel need to be part of the consist? It looks ridiculous.

First off that extra 20 spot for Mom, Dad & 2 kids is a big deal in Schuylkill County. People are very tight here Brian plus that 20 will buy Haluski & hamburgers for the family lunch!

2...the whole crew volunteers their time as a community service. Personally I'd like to see no diesel but I'll take this over a diesel only run or no train at all.

3...with what would be 2 trains on the branch the dispatcher in Port Clinton would need to be involved. This way they get the railroad from point to point for the specified time period & the dispatcher is left to run the rest of the railroad.

Maybe throw on a first class car that will generate the extra money to pay the second crew if they can't get enough volunteers.

Is there that much traffic elsewhere on the railroad that the dispatcher would be unduly burdened with having to deal with the light diesel in addition to the excursion train on this line?

This is an active segment of the Reading & Northern, not a tourist line. IIRC the Lehigh Scenic is a subsidiary set up by the R&N to operate the Jim Thorpe passenger service. The steam engine is based at Minersville & from what I understand their next priority is to get the engine under roof.

It seems to me there'd have to be something akin to a Form D or track warrant for both the tourist train and light engine in order for the diesel to be close enough to the steamer to continue movement in the case of CNJ 113 breaking down. If I were running a freight railroad and was now faced with the prospect of running a passenger train and light engine movement in the same track block I think I'd quail at the possibility of a collision between the two trains.

And are the people chasing the train providing funds for the operation? No offense to Mr. Painter and the others who chased (who certainly may have donated to the steamer's restoration), but if they're making their money for this trip largely from those who ride it then why make the aesthetics of the photographs taken of the train by non-paying chasers a priority?

I'm gonna mention that to Mr. Muller next time I see him, not so much from the revenue angle but just to ride, say the RBMN ex-Milwaukee Super Dome on that route if the clearances allow.

Is there that much traffic elsewhere on the railroad that the dispatcher would be unduly burdened with having to deal with the light diesel in addition to the excursion train on this line?
I'll side with Will on this. In addition to the liability exposure I think one dispatcher is responsible for the whole 300 mile railroad but I'll need to question someone at R&N if portions of the Lehigh Division are in their dispatching territory.

I do wish that I'd see more in the donation jar from those chasers that think it is their "right" to photograph an event like this. If you don't like the consist then don't friggin' show up. It was on several message boards that this type of consist would be running. Those of us who have put in countless unpaid hours & a few of our own dollars to make something like this happen know what I'm talking about. Personally I put something in the coal bucket even if I DO pay to attend or ride. I also try to patronize the locals for gas & food.
