That's awesome.

Me thinks the real reason why WMATA chose the Blue line for the first run was to placate the Virginia riders that lost their one seat ride to the I street corridor.

You're not the only one to say that. WMATA did say the cars wouldn't be on any one line and will get moved around. That said, I doubt we'll see them on the Yellow or Silver lines much at the beginning.

As I recall the 300 1k cars were delivered over a 4 year period. The first cars arrived on the property in late 1974. Their age ranges from 37 to 41 years.

No. I have to be at work 3 hours later 150 mile to the east.

I will likely see them sometime in June or July when I go over the bridge to check on progress of Phase II of the Silver line.

At what point in 7K deliveries do they start junking the 1K's ?

Not before all 128 cars procured for the Silver line are delivered.

Come to think of it WMATA has already disposed of at least 12 of the undamaged 1k cars, 4 are in a military training facility at Fort A P Hill in Virginia, 6 were shipped to a commercial training facility in Georgia.

My understanding is WMATA plans to hold roughly 70 of the 1k cars in reserve after all of the options of the 7k cars are delivered.

Me thinks they are doing this to have cars on hand for when 5 and 6k cars are off the property being rehabilitated.

Maryland is balking on their commitment to pay their share on fleet expansion options.

One thing I noticed is that even in a telephoto pic, they look a lot less precariously balanced/about to tip over due to the better rail width to vehicle height ratio.

Unfortunately, this equipment is being lavished on a corrupt agency.

From what I have son of the 7000s, they will be in 4 car sets much like NYCT’s 75 footers are now so they can only be run as either 4 car trains or 8 car trains and if 4 cars can’t handle passenger doing then Maryland will have to accept the 8 car trains as a fact of life.

WMATA could stick it to Maryland by turning back half of the trains on the time sheet at the last stations in DC. DC and VA would get all of the 8 car trains on the time sheet, Maryland would get half as many.

Half as many trains would be equivalent to shorter trains.

If WMATA were to do that, phone would start ringing of the hook in the offices of the Department of Transportation, Maryland Transit Administration and the Governor.

To my knowledge no one has come forward to preserve any of the 1k cars either in an operating museum or for stack display.

The historical value of the 1k cars has been diminished somewhat because their DC traction motors and cam controls have been upgraded to AC induction motors and power electronics.

If I were King, I'd get that telescopic aerospace junk off the tracks ASAP.

If I had my way all of the aluminum cars in WMATA's fleet would be converted into beverage cans and replace with stainless steel cars.

I would make it impossible for collisions to occur instead of putting effort into making the cars more survivable to collisions.

How would you go about doing that?

Red- Rush hour, make more trains be Silver Spring- Grosvenor. Off hours you could probably make a Takoma-Friendship Heights service work, but I doubt either of those terminals would work very well on peak headways. Perhaps turn some trains at Brookland using the Greenbelt connector.

Orange/Silver/Blue-
Cut the Blue back to Stadium Armory full time. Perhaps Some Silver turns at Addison Road and some Orange line at Cheverly. Additionally, any remaining capacity not used by the Blue at Stadium Armory could be used by Silver/Orange-

Yellow/Green-
Cut the Yellow back to Fort Totten or Mt. Vernon. Some short turning Greens at Fort Totten too.
On the south end, Turn some back at Naylor. I know Naylor is two stops into Maryland, but it is close enough to DC to keep IMHO.
Also, cutting back the Green to run additional Yellows might be worth considering.

Turn back in the Silver spring pocket using fall back operators that would board a Takoma, run through station without opening doors. fall back operators at Friendship Heights.

Orange line: Fall back operators at Deenwood, turn back using the Cheverly interlocking, run through station without opening doors.
Blue line: Fall back operators at Capitol Heights turn back using the Addison Road interlocking, enter and leave station without opening doors. Do the same with Silver line trains.

Green line: Fall back operators at Fort Totten and Southern Avenue.
Yellow line: Same as green line at Fort Totten.

Then you will be commuting to work in a Sherman tank, never going above 20 mph, like NYC subway cars. Without the Al cars, DC metro would accelerate as fast a Superliner.

Without the Al cars, DC metro would accelerate as fast a Superliner.

The original 1k cars were 500 hp each, 500 hp X 8 = 4,000 hp, After rehabilitation they were upgraded to 750 hp each, 750 hp X 8 = 6,000 hp.

The 7k car are 750 hp each, again 750 hp X 8 = 6,000 hp.

All of WMATA AC propulsion equipped rolling stock has been detuned to maintain compatibility with the DC chopper propulsion on the 4k cars.

All of the car are capable of going 75 mph, they all have an acceleration rate of 3 mph per second. they can be retuned using software to increase acceleration rate even higher.

That I don't know. Me thinks it won't happen until WMATA finishes upgrading their power distribution infrastructure so they can run 100 percent 8 car trains with their newer power hungry rolling stock.

Don't know if the 7k car are tuned the same as the rest of the fleet.
