East River Bridge Tolls May Impact Subway Customers |

Posted by heypaul on Tue Mar 3 17:29:32 2015 A proposal to charge each subway customer crossing the Manhattan & Williamsburg Bridges a 10 cent surcharge is being considered. The surcharge would be collected by a fare collection agent pushing a cart with a Johnson D Type farebox. |

It should be three dollars to match the roadway toll with EZ pass. That will ensure the trains don't become too crowded by drivers who will take the train instead.And the three dollars should be paid in quarters or dollar coins since the Johnsons don't accept dollar bills. Anyone without the correct coins should be given a $100 summons for fare evasion. |

A $3 subway toll will keep car owners from flocking to the subways and bursting the seams. Come to think of it, we should also impose a toll on all subway tunnels leading into Manhattan as cheap customers will take the R, F, A, CC,L , #7 and GG train into Manhattan. |

And if East River Bride tolls are put in place, you are saying hte subways wouldn't become more crowded? I know a bus every 30 minutes through the Battery Tunnel should be able to handle all the extra traffic. Wasn't that the MTA's plan last time? They didn't even offer to add any more trains if I remember correctly. The fact is more trains are needed today (and there is room in the shoulder periods because we are running less trains today than in the 1960s) and they are not being run.The MTA chairman said it himself that he remembers when you couldn't get into the first Lex express during rush hours, and now you have to miss four trains to get on. So how many will you have to miss when more are diverted from cars to the trains? |

A favorable decision would impact all transit agencies and the alleged fare evader could probably sue for a lot of money! By the way the case could probably be tried in federal court since it involves a federal issue. |

If the fare is over $1.00 and the fare boxes on the buses are incapable of accepting dollar bills, then the agency is technically violation of federal law since if a passenger boards and offers legal tender and the operator in the form of the farebox refuses to accept it then a violation on the part of the agency attaches. |

The LIRR, MNCR, NJT, and the commuter buses handle the vast majority of suburban commuters into Manhattan. There are many who transfer at Atlantic, and some at Hunters Pt, to the subways.There is a way to reduce rush hr traffic in Manhattan. Increase HOV Bus Lanes, and institute Commercial/Truck Lanes on the non toll bridges. For example: Current condition on Queensboro Bridge: AM Peak: 2 HOV lanes + 2 car lanes (upper level) & 2 general traffic lanes (lower level) in peak direction. Change to 2 HOV Lanes + 2 car lanes (upper level) & 1 HOV-Bus lane + 1 Truck/Commercial lane (lower level). It would encourage car pooling and taking commuter buses. It faster to implement than CBTC on IND Queens Blvd Trunk. |
