Their interiors looked a lot like Comet I's, more modern than I had thought. They were originally built as MU's in the 50's, IIRC. |

They even ran in Staten Island when they were MUs.I was on them for a ride between LIC and Jamaica. GP38-2 at the east end and Alco at the west end. They should've kept cabs on the cars and rebuilt the Alcos with HEP instead. |

I was going to guess Jim Thorpe.Either way, just north of the Jim Thorpe train station there is a little yard that stored a bunch of old SEPTA cars. Don't know if the cars are still there. They're not visible from the street. You have to trespass or take the museum train to get into the yard. |

The only thing remotely modern was the seats... and I promise you they were nothing like Comet Is. Square windows, storm doors that would wedge half open, and negative shock absorbers (I'm pretty sure they amplified bumps). The weird wood panel in the middle of the car. The single column of lights that would blink out for minutes at a time. No PA. View of the track below through holes a baseball could roll through. |

They were refurbished some time in the 70's or early 80s with the M1 like seats. They were great. I used to rarely sit inside them, as the vestebules were a blast to ride in, especially in low platform territory where the doors would be open. And the best had to be the last car on Montauk trains that didn't have an engine on the back. All open. The new trains destroyed my LIRR railfanning, as these coaches may have been rolling disasters for the commuters, they were a railfan's dream. |

I rode then from time to time from Oyster Bay & Montauk & they had a very bouncy ride, especially, over grade crossings. Often wondered if they bounced so high & just luckily the truck landed right on the rails on the way down. They had a "feel" about them thats missing from todays trains, like the sound of the brakes applying with the shoes squealing & hissing, or the buffer plates crunching together with every bounce. Little things that moved over for progress. I guess. |

The did not have many coil springs, and they had the Pennsy influence of leaf springs on their Commonwealth trucks, which ordinarily run very well.It looks like they have at least primed the other 2 cars. The patch over the door pocket corrosion is removed. They bounced plenty on LIRR grade crossings and switches, but not on MN's on their crossings (on fan trips). When run 65 MPH over Nassau Interlocking and crossings, the truck would bottom out under you. |
