WMATA Silver Line Question

Now that the Silver Line is in operation, how much have frequencies been reduced on the Orange and Blue Lines (with which the Silver shares trackage)? I always thought the Blue Line must have had relatively infrequent service since it shares all of its stations but one with the Orange or the Blue Line. Has it lost even more service?

Blue Line now runs every 12 minutes during the peak while every other line runs every 6 minutes during the peak (Red Line runs every 3 minutes during the peak between Grosvenor and Silver Spring). Half of what were previously Blue Line trains are now Yellow Line trains that operate from Franconia to Greenbelt via the Fenwick Bridge. The Orange Line lost a few trains each hour that were running between Vienna and Largo; these were converted in to Silver Line trains. Frequencies on the Blue and Orange lines off peak remain unchanged from what they were, and the new Silver Line stations have more service than they used to at these hours. All stations along the Blue Line have the same or more service than they did prior to the Silver Line opening with the exception of Arlington Cemetery.

Peak service:
Prior to the creation of Rush Plus the service between Rosslyn and Stadium Armory was roughly split evenly between the Blue and Orange lines.

After the creation of Rush Plus one third of the Blue line trains between Rosslyn and Stadium Armory were converted to Orange line trains between Vienna and New Carrollton. One third of the Blue line trains between Rosslyn and Stadium Armory were converted to Yellow line trains between Springfield-Franconia and Greenbelt. The remaining third of the Blue line trains ran between Springfield-Franconia and and Largo.
After the opening of the Silver line:
Service levels between East Falls Church and Stadium Armory remains the same.

Roughly one half of the trains between Vienna and New Carrollton (the third of the Blue line that formerly ran between Springfield-Franconia and and Largo) are now Silver line trains between Wiehle - Reston East and Largo.

Red, Blue and Yellow line service remains unchanged.
Station with reduced service:
Orange line:
Dunn Lorring, Vienna*

Blue line:
Arlington Cemetery

* Service was reduced to the levels prior to the creation of Rush Plus. See Orange line trains converted to Sliver line trains above.
Off peak and weekends:
Service between East Falls Church and Stadium Armory is evenly split between the Orange and Silver lines, service between Rosslyn and Stadium Armory is evenly split between the Blue, Orange and Silver lines.

Service between King Street and Pentagon is evenly split between the Blue and Yellow lines, service between L'Enfant Place and Fort Totten is evenly split between the Green and Yellow lines.

Red line remains unchanged.

I would imagine the supplementary Silver service between East Falls Church & Rosslyn have helped the "Orange crush" (severe overcrowding on the Orange line).

Prior to the Silver line, rush-hour frequencies were inexplicably equal on the Blue & Orange lines, even though you could often find a seat on most Blue trains, where the Orange was so crowded your face would be pressed against the glass doors.

I simply said what Oren said in a different way.

Fact is, WMATA is dispatching the same number of trains during peak now that it was dispatching prior to the creation of Rush Plus.

WMATA simply changed the terminal pairs of two thirds of the Blue line trains to accommodate the opening of the Silver line and accommodate the higher loads on the west end of the Orange line.

The Orange and Blue lines have greater peak loads on their west ends compared to their east ends.

The schema WMATA implemented ended up killing two birds with one stone. By changing the terminal pairs of two thirds of Blue line trains WMATA accommodated the opening of the Silver line and increased service on the Orange line west of Rosslyn.

The Orange and Blue lines have greater peak loads on their west ends compared to their east ends.

That's why I said ". . . roughly split evenly between the Blue and Orange lines". I figured there were some trippers, thing is I did'nt know how many there were.

I think as many as 9 at times on the Orange Line. There are 3 on the Green Line as far as I know.
