They did that during the South Ferry project which shut down the whole manhattan IRT south of Chambers save the Clark branch. It was usually a shuttle from Essex to Prospect, but the M is currently using the middle track at Essex the shuttle used to use. also, now that Broadway-Lafayette/Bleecker has a transfer in both directions, you can just take the D there both ways or the Q at Canal or USQ. |

Why run empty J shuttles that had about 5 people per train? Most people weren't aware of the J, and of those that were, preferred the express D, N or Q to Atlantic. The J weekend shuttle was a complete failure. |

In addition one transfer that was very important south of Brooklyn Bridge was the set of transfers at Fulton Street between the A and C trains and the #4 and #5 trains. This transfer enabled Brooklyn and and east side of Manhattan connections between those lines.Well the new transfer at Jay Street-MetroTech between the R and the A, C and F trains, and then the transfers between the #4 and #6 trains at Canal Street, Union Square, and in midtown - means that it is possible to accomplish an alternative journey. The advent of the unlimited Metro-Card, and the years long weekend goings-on at the Fulton Street transfer station meant that many had to learn alternative pathways. Of course, there is the feeling that the TA would prefer that many folks forget that there ever was a way to travel via the Nassau Street line and southern Brooklyn. Mike |

Why did they run them as separate shuttles anyway, rather than extending the regular J trains south from Chambers St?Anyway, the Broad St.-Montague tunnel connection is out of service "long term", as G1Ravage points out. |

There are also clearance issues which the TA is keeping secret and no one here is talking about.Someone who works for the TA and was on Cuomo's inpspection train told me at the Model Train Show in Rutgers that an Arnine suffered a gash in its roof while moving through the Montague Tunnel last fall. As a result, R32 and R42 are also banned. |

That did used to be the standard practice in such instances. But they haven't done it since the Brown M was abolished.Although I have no way of knowing this for sure, I think it's because they want the public to forget that a connection exists between the Nassau Street Line and the Montague Tunnel- they're afraid of a clamor to re-establish regular service there. My theory, anyway... |

That connection is very convenient to have even without revenue service, just in terms of GOs and train movements. A short, seamless link from the Eastern Division to the Southern Division. I think it's more essential than the Chrystie St Cut was when it went unused. I hope they take care of it. |

Public clambering can be quelled very easily buying a technique employed by one of the old time NYCTA schedule makers. Whenever a local politician would call to inquire about adding or increasing service, the S/M would simply reply that while it could be looked into, providing such an increase would jeopardize the existing fare structure. Nothing would ever be a heard about it again. |

But they were able to get away with that on the G because that was during off-peak hours. They wouldn't be able to do that with a rush-hour service, which is presumably when a J extension to south Brooklyn would run. |

Maybe, but in over four years since the M was rerouted to 6th Ave, I haven't really seen or heard much clamor about restoring a Nassau-Montague service, outside of here on Subchat and (to a lesser extent) on Second Avenue Sagas. It may be that there really wasn't that much of a demand for that service, so it was easily expendable when the MTA had to cut services back in 2010. |
