NY Sen. Chucky wants passengers input in designing new LIRR's Kawasaki M-9 rail cars

For all the money and time they spend on the train each month, Long Island Rail Road commuters should be provided more amenities, and a more comfortable ride, Sen. Charles Schumer said Monday.

Schumer (D-N.Y.) joined LIRR Commuter Council chairman Mark Epstein at a Farmingdale news conference to urge the LIRR to consider several new conveniences in its next generation of train cars, currently under design. They mentioned glare-resistant windows, wider seats and clearer audio announcements.

"Whether it's sitting in the middle, crammed in a three-person row, or missing your stop because of muffled speakers, or ripping your pants on the arm rest . . . any of those things are enough to drive you crazy," Schumer said. "Long Island Rail Road customers pay the highest fares. They also deserve the highest quality ride. Now is the time to make that happen."

The MTA last year approved a $1.8 billion contract with Yonkers-based Kawasaki Rail to build as many as 584 new electric cars for the LIRR and Metro-North. The cars are expected to join the LIRR's fleet by 2017, replacing the aging M-3 cars.

In response to the calls, LIRR spokesman Salvatore Arena said Monday that the LIRR has already planned some of the recommended improvements such as slightly wider seats, better arm rests, clearer audio and visual announcements, electrical outlets on all seat rows, and Wi-Fi readiness.

Other recommendations may not be feasible, Arena said. For example, tinting train windows any darker could make it difficult for some customers to see station signs at night, he said.

"The LIRR and Metro-North have always made customer input a key part of the process of developing new rail cars," Arena said.

Schumer urged the LIRR to reach out to riders for ideas on amenities they'd like to see on new trains, including through an "online suggestion box" and customer surveys on trains. Arena said the LIRR already plans to conduct focus groups early next year on interior design choices for new trains.

"Our dialogue with our customers will continue as we conduct our focus groups and analyze the results of those studies," Arena said.

Epstein also Monday called on the LIRR to develop written guidelines on how long it will keep video footage recorded on new security cameras the railroad plans to install in most trains.

Sure you can. Get rid of the 3x2 seats. Make them all 2x2 seating with slightly wider seats & make for wider isles. Nobody sits in the middle seat of a 3 seater anyway, especially with todays paranoia about catching coodies from a suprise sneeze or whatever is the disease du jour of the day that might be carried by your fellow passenger. I've seen riders stand instead of sitting in the middle of a 3 seater.

The wider isles would come in handy on holidays when travelers who fail to grasp the concept of travelling light & board with those cumbersome luggage carts with what seems to be a good portion of their worldy possessions.

They can't legally do that, the requirement is for 100 people per car minimum with 2x2 seating you only less than 80 per car. your fleet would need to be increased by 20%.
were would you yard all that equipment and were are you gone run all those trains that need to be 20 % longer, just impossible unless you go with double deckers, which gives you other problems.

Even with 3+2 seating, there is a seating reduction from an M3, though I think some of the area behind the cab vis-a-vis an M7 is reclaimed for seating.

Ah well; it'll just get bigger.

Perhaps the M9 ought to be a bilevel similar to NJT's planned MLV "power cars" but inter-workable with the C3 cars? Not like Kawasaki can't build something like that.

Splendid idea. All they have to do is figure out a workable design that will fit in the Park Ave tunnel & maneuver the crossovers north of the platforms. Forget about the loop tracks.

I do not think LIRR wants any MU's they cannot operate to 63rd STreet.
Obviously the 5 train dual mode fleet can't, but that concept will go not further.

Huge planning mistake, designing a tunnel that would never accept bi-level cars, since that concept was in full force (successfully) in the Chicago commuter zone back then, when the 63d st tunnel in the planning stage. As far as I know.

AFAIK, the tunnel was designed for subway cars. LIRR would have been an afterthought here.

Wasn't that a bi-level tunnel with the subway on top & the LIRR underneath? The LIRR (MTA) dictated the specs of dimentions which at the time gave no thought of the future equiptment, AKA BI-level cars.

At the time the 63 St tunnel was designed, the MTA didn’t exist and I believe the LIRR still had some double deck cars in its fleet. I doubt that any significant changes would have been made between the time of design and the time actual construction started and even then, there were probably still some LIRR double deckers still operating.

The M-1 was designed in 1966, then to be just 500 cars. I saw artist renderings in Trains at the time.

The double deckers were around thru Feb 1972. Only the 30 MP75 would have been able to fit through 63rd, if that. They were 2 inches taller than an M-1.

I don't recall anything about consideration for any LIRR stock running through there, frankly. The main single-deck MUs were the MP72, and I'm not sure the MP70Bs would have fit. (This pic is from 1971.)
