These actually were to/from Metropolitan. Can't say how the signs were set on the AM, but on the PM's I did an occasional trip down there. We would leave Met with R/95 signs. After 95 as the t/o was going back lite to 36/4 to re-enter service, the c/r would change the signs back to M.For a while on the PM all were to 95 with a few Bay Pky. trains mixed in starting @ ENYD. In later picks every other train from Met went to Bay Pky. Some laid up, some returned when at the end of the service day some more went down to Bay Pky. to ly up and others went to 9th Ave. to lay up. When the graffitti era ended later till the end of all Bay Pky. service, all M trains which finished in the south (9 or 10) laid up to CIYD as all the junk was cleared out by then freeing tracks. |

I consider this unfortunate- while at the time there was still the M running from Broad Street to South Brooklyn, now there's NONE.right up till June 2010, I saw a decent crowd on AM trains pulling into Broad Street from Brooklyn. What virtually NOBODY did was ride straight through from Court Street to Marcy Avenue. Therefore, I'd hope they can, in the near future, establish some sort of Brown R, though perhaps nowadays a Brown D or Q might make more sense. Although few people would ride through, if it operationally makes more sense to simply extend the J, I saw do that. |

My only reason for opposing Sixth Ave. M service was because I considered it as robbing Peter to pay Paul. NYCT was not giving you both and I pointed it out at the time. I was thrown to the wolves because y'all comprehended what you wanted. Now it seems everybody is missing the old service and wants it back. They don't have the cars. That's ok. It's akin of sombody calling a sports show asking the host who was the better player: Mantle or Mays. If the host answered Mantle, somebody else calls later lambasting the host not giving Mays his due. Of course I want thru Nassau service back. But I know this: NYCT wants to get rid of the R32/42 when the R179's come in. Still not enough cars to extend the J or Z. |

Were they all from Met? I seem to recall that there were only 2 intervals each in the AM and PM that went all the way to/from Met. |

It varied pick to pick.Between the M stopped going over the Brighton line and when the WillyB closed for long term rebuilding, they changed the jobs every pick because nothing seemed to work right. |

Alternatively this was run-through and coined the "Metropolitan Ave. R" in around 1985-87. I remember R-27/30s and R-42s on the diamond "R" route. I have a shot of an R-30 curving into the Myrtle/Broadway station bearing a yellow diamond "R" sign. |

Bill... certainly I never attacked you.Anyhow, I would like to see both 6 Avenue-Broadway Brooklyn AND thru service from Broad Street to DeKalb and beyond. I realize they don't have the cars. Both services were run from 1968-1976, and today there's more demand for them than there was back then. I'd hope the TA would invest in enough equipment to operate both. Just get more R160s or R179s... If the politicians put up the $$, it can happen. And this is a discussion board. Within the bounds of mutual respect, as I extend to you now, we can all post whatever train fantasy we want... |

I remember that at the end, most AM trains out of Metro were diamond R's. Only 2 trains ran thru to Bay Parkway, one running all the way to Stillwell to lay up. That train always used an R27. |

M trains stopped running via Brighton when the Manhattan Bridge repairs started. M trains were rerouted via 4 Ave/ West End. For a brief period, M trains ran via 4 Ave Exp during rush hrs. |

Given the choices, the MTA did the right thing sending the (M) via 6th Avenue. That was the only good thing about the cuts and was very logical. |

Given the decline in the Financial District and the increase in Midtown, it was a wise idea. The ridership increase speaks for itself. |

Actually, when the Ms ran express on 4 Av it was during all hours when the M operated into the Southern Div and the Ns ran lcl for the entire length of the trip. Towards the end of the manny B shutdown, it was decided to run the Ns exp and the Ms lcl on 4 Av during the hours when the M ran on 4 Av. That service pattern lasted until the Ms were taken out of the Southern Div. |

And this is a discussion board. Within the bounds of mutual respect, as I extend to you now, we can all post whatever train fantasy we want...We can? Oh goody! Let's rebuild the 3rd Avenue el, then run it across the Brooklyn Bridge and up Myrtle and Lexington. Let's build a tunnel from Staten Island to Bay Ridge and run a Staten Island super-express (that will also benefit Bay Ridge riders). Let's run LIRR trains to the Rockaways and not care what the FRA thinks! Alleviate crowding at Penn Station by terminating some peak trains at Chambers Street. And then we'll build a big freight tunnel underneath Manhattan equipped with pneumatic tubes that unload passing trains and whisk everything straight to its destination so we don't need any trucks on the streets. OK that's enough for now. |

To be fair, once the M was routed off Brighton and onto 4th Ave, the diamond R (the brown R only existed on maps for 6 months prior to it's elimination) lost it's sole reason to exist. |
