Once again this holiday season, the MTA will offer nostalgia lovers the opportunity to the ride back into the past with rides on vintage buses and subway trains. There’s no better way to get around while doing your holiday shopping! Dating back to the early part of last century, the Nostalgia Train is made up of subway cars in service along the lettered lines between the early1930s to the mid-1970s. Equipped with ceiling fans, padded seats and incandescent light bulbs, the R/1 through R/9 cars served the IND and later some BMT lines. Customers will have the opportunity to hop on board as it operates along the Sixth Avenue (M) Line.

“Holiday shoppers, tourists and those who just remember a bygone era will have the opportunity to experience a ride on a subway train from yesteryear, said MTA New York City President Carmen Bianco. “With a little bit of luck and good timing, riders will be able to catch a ride on this classic subway train at stations along the (M) line between Queens Plaza and Second Avenue.”

Many New Yorkers bear fond memories of the trains. However, with the cars having been out of service for nearly 40 years, many more New Yorkers have never experienced the charm of wicker seats and ceiling fans. The holiday “Nostalgia Train” will operate on Sundays only, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., on November 30, December 7, 14, 21, and 28.

NOSTALGIA TRAIN HIGHLIGHTS:

Car No. 100 --- Manufactured by American Car and Foundry, this R1-type car was the first car in the initial order of 300 cars placed in service for the opening of the IND subway.

Car No. 484 --- Part of a 500-car order of R4 cars manufactured by American Car & Foundry. In 1946, this car received a retrofit of bulls-eye lighting and a public address system.

Car No. 1575 – Originally manufactured as an R7, this car was involved in a wreck in 1946. Sent to the American Car & Foundry factory, the car, which is equipped with fluorescent lighting and smooth sides, was rebuilt as the prototype of the next generation R10 subway car.

Some of the vintage train cars are usually housed at the New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn, where they have honored positions as static displays reflecting a time before automated voice announcements, air conditioning or bright fluorescent lighting. Customers can always catch more vintage trains on display at the Museum. And, don’t forget, the Annual Holiday Train Show at the Museum’s Gallery Annex at Grand Central Terminal features a working layout and a selection of vintage model trains dating from the 1800s. The Holiday train show is on view now through February 22, 2015. Hours are Monday through Friday between 8 a. m. and 8 p.m. and weekends 10 a. m. to 8 p. m. (Saturday) and 10 a. m. to 7 p. m. (Sunday). Please note: The Gallery Annex and Store at Grand Central will close at 6 p.m. on Nov 26, Dec 24 and Dec 31.

The Gallery and Annex is located on the main concourse, adjacent to the Stationmaster’s office.

Note: All Nostalgia services are weather permitting. The Nostalgia Train runs will be canceled in the event that winter weather necessitates storing the subway fleet along express tracks underground.

I am not sure how that would affect the Nostalgia train since it uses the local track along 6th Av.

They don't store trains on the express tracks at 2nd Av (too tempting and easy for vandals). I don't know if they would use track D5 (north of Queens Plaza) as storage.

I recall a few years ago that it ran between Whitehall St and either 57/7 or Qnsbro Plaza on those selected days. One year it even ran between 168 St and WTC.

Different occasions. When it operated on the Broadway line, it was in connection with the 100th anniversary of the IRT. The runs between 168th Street and WTC was in recognition of the 75th anniversary of the A line.

With the train stored at 207th Street Yard, it's trivial to send the train to 2nd Avenue or WTC for runs between there and Queens Plaza. To get to the Broadway line, the train would have to reverse twice: at 34th Street and at Lexington/63rd.

During cold weather plans, both express tracks between W.4th & 34th store trains. Therefore the D would have to use the local tracks.

They leave trains on the express tracks on the Hillside Ave line all the time, even in the station at Union Turnpike and Parsons Blvd. So that can't be the reason for using those tracks for snowbirds.

Actually, the train wouldn’t have to reverse ends twice. All it would need to do would be to go down 6 Av and the Manny B to Pacific St S/B exp tk, change ends and proceed through the tunnel to Whitehall St.

Again and again alway the same V/M line very years for the last 10years or more BORING ! Why not run on another line for a change run the train from Queensboro to brighton beach relay at 39 ave bebe middle or 57 st-7ave to Brighton beach or at least Whitehall middle local stop to Queens plaza or Queens boro, 3 or 4 round trips, there is enough shopper on the b'way line local station can enjoy the ride from prince st to Lex. and same for Dekalb and Alantic ave station. Best route to run this train is the Q line from Queensboro station local stop all the way to Brighton beach station over the manhattan bridge so very body in Manhattan, brooklyn and Queens fron the 7 line tranfer at Q.Boro station can enjoy it

Exactly. Plus Second Ave. is ideal so any quick repair on the train can be done and the crew can grab a quick bite and take a leak once in a while.

Under chippers, uh rainman89's proposal, it would be a 2 hour headway. This routing also gives the train good access to 207YD.

Finally at this point savy NY'ers are used to this train running every Sunday during the holiday season.

The route isn't what I would change EXCEPT for MAYBE having it go over the Willy B and run between Myrtle Avenue and Queens Plaza.

The one thing I would do is have one Saturday evening run of the train, as I would do it most likely on Dec. 13 from 4:00-11:00 PM to accommodate those who would want to go on Sunday but are tied up by the NFL all day long (especially since for many they have the Fantasy Football playoffs during that time and that is big bucks for many now, and in some cases five and six figures) and for those who come into NYC on Saturday that can't do so on Sunday. I would do it Saturday night to accommodate those who can't do it during the day on Saturday due to the Jewish Sabbath.

You forget the NFL is the 800-pound gorilla of sports and you may not realize how much fantasy football has exploded in recent years:

Many people now spend all of Sunday morning finalizing and deciding who to play on their fantasy teams and then spend ALL of Sunday afternoon and night watching the games. This is not for ego anymore, some have won half a million or more with fantasy football. There are reasons you have all those ads for Draft Kings and Fan Duel now.

That's why I do one Saturday evening run, for people who can't go Sunday because of the NFL and fantasy football and at night for those who can't go in the daytime because of the Jewish Sabbath (and I do it 12/13 because except for the Army-Navy game, it's the only Saturday without football as there are NFL games the following Saturday).

So too bad for them! If their fantasy football league is their priority, then that's their business. It's not the MTA's job to accommodate a bunch of fantasy footballers! And why should it be? If these guys want to spend all day Sunday watching football, that's their decision. The MTA shouldn't have to completely rearrange the times they operate the Nostalgia Train because fantasy football!

This is just like your past posts about how the MTA had to complete its weekend shutdowns on the 7 line before baseball season starts, in order to not arouse the wrath of Mets fans and ownership. Please!

Sunday seems to be when the shoppers are out in force. There's no need to run the train on a Saturday just for people who can't choose not to ride on Sundays because of football, let alone confine it to the comparatively less attractive schedule of a Saturday night just to accommodate the tiny handful of people who can't choose not to ride trains during daylight on Saturdays because of Shabbos.

Do the old BMT Steels ever run anymore. Recent nostalgia trains have been R1-9s. I'd love to see the old BMT cars on the tracks again.

Apparently they're working to put together a functional train of Standards but thus far there's nothing.

Last I heard, the Triplexes broke down in 2004 and haven't run since. There's no plan to get them back on the road.

The steels are being gradually repaired at CIY. Apparently someone made off with a few parts and they now have to be made by hand to duplicate the originals. Even when the cars are made operable, there will only be one 3 car B unit available. IOf and when it does become available, i would imagine that the logical place to run it would be the BMT Bway Subway between 57/7 and Whitehall or if the SAS is open by then, Qnsbro Pl or Astoria and Whitehall. Actually was also thinking that either the Lo-Vs or the TOMC could be run on the IRT between 96/Bway and either T/Sq or maybe even So/Fy.

That "tiny" part of the population that CAN'T ride Saturday afternoon because of Shabbos politically is very loud in a lot of ways. That is why I do one Saturday night run on December 13 to accommodate those who observe Shabbos and are not allowed to ride on trains in the daytime on Saturdays AND mainly to accommodate those who can't go on Sunday due to the NFL as Fantasy Football has become THAT big.

I don't think you realize how big a business Fantasy Football has become. Most leagues are in their playoffs starting as early as this week (as most want to wrap up by Week 16 to avoid a bunch of meaningless games in Week 17), and some of those leagues have people making well into six figures. It's not like even five years ago now.

That may be, but guess what? Shabbat-observant Jewish railfans can still ride the Arnines on Sunday! That's probably what they do now.

As for fantasy footballers, once again, so what? In fact, I'm willing to bet the vast majority of fantasy footballers don't know or care about any Nostalgia Train. I'm even more sure that a significant number of fantasy footballers think that taking trains - in general - is "kinda lame."

So really, why bother? It's going to be a lot fewer people than you think it is.
