Nope. The other three bridges, connecting to New Jersey, date from the 1930's. Small wonder that Staten Island, where I lived 1982-3, had, at least to me, a New Jersey state of mind.

I remember crossing it 3 times on the day that it opened.

Once by car (eastbound, I think that we went to New Jersey through the Holland Tunnel and came back via Staten Island), and then later that evening a round-trip bus ride from 95th St/4th Ave subway station.

No rails, so offtopic.

Although IIRC, the alternate PRR line that never got built that was supposed to diverge at Rahway NJ to cross Staten Island en route to Manhattan had plans for a suspension bridge between SI and Brooklyn.

Amen to that! Planners were kickin around the idea of connecting the BMT 4th Ave subway to the then SIRT over the VZ
He screamed long & hard that he didn't want any rapid transit, subway lines on the bridge. Of course, another fight that he won.

BTW I remember the NY State DMV issuing license plates with the VZ as the first two letters on plates issued in Staten Island when the bridge opened.

The environmentalists stopped that one due to the possibility of some rare species of birds being deprived of their home. Birds and other animals are smarter than many humans and they would simply have relocated to either side of the completed parkway like the residents of Bay Ridge did when the access road to the V/N bridge was built through their neighborhood.

IIRC that lower level was built along with the rest of the bridge, but wasn't put in service until '69. I've always been curios as to how much work needed to be done. Was it paved along with the upper level, or was the roadway poured just before the lower level opened?

I'm sure it was completed at the same time but wasn't expected to open until 1975. The sheer volume of traffic forced the earlier opening. The GW was built with the provision for a lower deck if the future called for it which it obviously did.

"Of the three worker deaths during the construction of the bridge, one occurred when Gerard McKee, 19, fell through a gap where a portion of the chicken wire sidewall had been removed from a catwalk. The handsome, well-liked son of a veteran "boomer" (a bridge construction worker), he had followed his father into the risky trade. McKee slipped off the catwalk and was hanging by one hand when spotted by another worker, Edward Iannelli. Tragically and ironically, the dangerous nature of heavy construction and bridge-building had sealed McKee's fate: Iannelli's left hand had been permanently mauled in a previous bridge construction accident, and Iannelli was unable to drag McKee back to safety. When McKee finally lost his grip, the wind tore the shirt from his back as he plummeted nearly 300 feet to the water below."

When the crooked pols (are there any others?) don't want to provide rail transit, they can usually find consultants who will write a scary report claiming that the bridge can't support rail. One fine example was a report generated when BART DIDN'T WANT to go over thye Golden Gate Bridge which had been engineered to accept underslung trackage.
