Posted by Gold_12th on Sun Nov 9 17:16:58 2014 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Designed by: PentagramImages: MTA's twitter, 2AvSagas New York's biggest subway hub opened Sunday in lower Manhattan — a vital link between the new World Trade Center and the rest of the city. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority inaugurated the $1.4 billion Fulton Center, a transit complex where many subway lines converge. "Welcome to the station of the 21st century," engineer Michael Horodniceanu, president of MTA's Capital Construction who led the work, told a gathering of transit and political officials, including Sen. Charles Schumer and Rep. Jerrold Nadler. Officials said the transit and retail hub will serve as Lower Manhattan's next great public space — encased in a glass-and-steel shell with a soaring, light-filled atrium. It also includes retail and office space. The federal government funded 90 percent and the state the rest of the project, which fills 180,000 square feet of new retail and office space, plus five old stations that were refurbished and linked. The center will accommodate up to 300,000 daily riders using the 2, 3, 4, 5 subway lines, plus the A, C, J, Z and R. A 350-foot tunnel was built leading to the World Trade Center's Santiago Calatrava-designed transit facility and the PATH commuter train to New Jersey. That tunnel will open sometime next year. After a decade of work following the destruction of the World Trade Center area and flooding from Superstorm Sandy in 2012, "we made it," Horodniceanu said. - AP |

One detail I would like them to finally clarify is how the names work.IE, effective 5AM tomorrow, the entire station complex is now "Fulton Center" and that will be the name on signs, train announcements and maps? Or is Fulton Center just the entrance/mall structure and the station areas remain Fulton Street? Because the MTA and the media have always played this, at least as far as I can tell, like it's the former. And the media seems to want to play this up as all new construction, not a complex ranging from brand new to 109 years old. Heck, on Wikiepdia they are two seperate articles. |

How do you know it is not a free transfer? It could be free (if such was needed) via your MetroCard, if they so wanted to do so.LION thinks this is not necessary, it is not so much a transfer point as it is an access to the neighborhood, and all of the trains therein. LION seas no reason to switch to an (R) there, that can be done elsewhere. (14th Street). There is no place in lower Manhattan that the (R) serves that is not also easily accessible to the other trains. Or am I wrong? Somebody always tells me that I am wrong. Who cares. Peepholes will still make their whey to wrok witho or without the transfer (or the LION). ROAR |

They did it between the IRT and Brighton Line Atlantic Ave. stations. Pacific Street stayed separate. Later, when Pacific Street was included in the free transfer, that barrier came down, but I don't believe the corridor between the IRT and Pacific Street was ever divided. |

"LION seas no reason to switch to an (R) there, that can be done elsewhere. (14th Street). There is no place in lower Manhattan that the (R) serves that is not also easily accessible to the other trains."At the "new" South Ferry Station transfers between the #1 and the R, at first glance does not "seem" to be useful, but turned out to be very useful. The "new" South Ferry Station also brought about benefits when it came to repairs on the tunnels that the #2 & #3 trains use to reach Brooklyn. Until the new station opened in 2009 (and was later damaged by Hurricane Sandy), both the South Ferry and the Whitehall Street stations were separate stations, with separate entrances, etc. Similarly in Brooklyn at Atlantic Avenue in the 1980's the Atlantic Avenue station consisted of the #2, #3, #4 and #5 lines, and the D, M and QB trains on the Brighton line. The Pacific Street station was a separate stations with its own entrances, and a small "extra fare" tunnel that connected the stations from the Brooklyn-bound #2 and #3 platform. Connecting and renovating the whole complex has brought about many benefits for the riders. So far, as I understand it, the Dey Street underground passageway is simply to connect the entire World Trade Center complex and the Fulton Transit Center WITHOUT the riders having to venture outside. Many cities have underground passageways that connect office and shopping centers as well as transit facilities. Mike |

Definitely too fancy for just a subway station. But it is supposed to be a shopping mall also (the upper floors). So we'll see how it goes when those floors open.Presumably, the upper (retail) floors will be closed off during nighttime hours. So I hope that they will include amenities that suburban malls generally have, such as restrooms (that are kept clean), and perhaps water fountains and even some benches or chairs that shoppers can sit down on to rest. |
