SmartTrack in Toronto thoughts

Toronto just had a mayors race, where transit figured fairly heavily. (Street cars vs subways. LRT vs subway. Buses only, etc).

The winner, John Tory, proposed SmartTrack which is basically run EMU's on existing commuter/frieght trackage, from the west side of the city (Airport extension line route basically) to Union Station, then as the Relief line replacement, up an existing ROW and fairly far north.

Not clear what specific EMU's he is suggesting, but 15 min intervals all day long.

(Also Scarborough RT replaced with Subway, meh... I liked the idea of rebuilding the current RT to Crosstown RT standards and make it all one line, better.)

I could not find any reference on this site to discussing this, wondering what the thundering herds have to say.

It's refreshing to see a politician have a well-thought-out, detailed transit improvement plan through repurposing of existing infrastructure. Wish that were true in NY.

The Scarborough RT should have been built as an extension of the Bloor-Danforth Line. It should be rebuilt as such.

I'm admittedly rushing this post right now, but according to some, it isn't exactly well thought out in certain regards. If you're more interested, read Steve Munro's wonderful blog on transit in Toronto...

What is the fate of the Scarborough RT ROW?

Probably true, but alas, was not. So the question is, do you go forward, discard an existing right of way and convert to subway, or is it easier to extend a transit line coming in, that is vaguely compatible?

The question for me is, how much work is needed to convert the SRT to the Crosstown specs. I know the track would need to change gauge from Toronto gauge to North American standards. (I assume the SRT is using goofy Toronto gauge). I know the concrete sidewalls are scoped for a train uniquely sized like the SRT cars. And no one makes cars the proper size these days to fit.

Do this now, don't even think about it. Cancel those idiotic DMUs and order EMUs for this service. It's the perfect way to get the same results as the proposed Downtown Relief Line without the insane costs of a rapid transit line.

I think you have it backwards. The Crosstown line (Bloor-Danforth) is using Toronto non-standard gauge (same as the Yonge-Spadina line). SRT is standard gauge just like NYC and most other transit lines in North America.

Ah you confuse Bloor-Danforth (Subway completely built out in the 1960's era) with the new Eglington Crosstown, a new currently under construction tunnel (mostly) for basically streetcars, running on North American gauge tracks.

Bloor Danforth is Toronto gauge.

I was unsure of SRT's gauge.

EMU's need overhead power, right? That can't be cheap. (I never understood how hundreds and hundreds of miles of line could be electrified in the 1940-60's but now costs billions of dollars to do. Tunneling, station building costing more I get. String power lines though? Ya, more substations and trasnformers, fine, I get those too. But still)
