Old New York Central RR Question
Posted by Andy on Sat Oct 25 20:38:54 2014 edf40wrjww2msgDetail:detailStr fiogf49gjkf0d The Amtrak Empire trains today use tracks north of Penn Station that were once part of the New York Central Railroad. The line was primarily used by freight trains going back to the 19th century. The portion south of 30th Street is today's High Line Park. The tracks north of 30th Street were equipped with third rail for a good part of the 20th century. Does anyone know when the third rail was installed, and when it was removed? The answer to the "removed" question is probably sometime in the 1950s but even that may be wrong. Thanks to all who provide information.

It was extended to Wakefield the following month. On March 16,1910 it was extended to North White Plains and on March 2, 1913, extended to Croton. The freight line from Spuyten Duyvil to the 30th Street yard was electrified in 1931. By 1957 the electrified freight lines and yards tracks had the third rail removed.
