While mentioning moderators, let me explain why I always liked Dave's board, and it's lack of "moderators", and why I liked Dave's style on the board.
I already posted this on Harry's board, but I will copy and paste it here, but it's written in context to the post I was responding to at Harry's Board:

Duh, that's why we need moderators. Well not specifically for that reason because calling someone an asshat is a necessary evil. But we need mods for other reasons.

Let me explain why I am really reluctant to post on a "moderated" board. The problem is it is too iron handed.
I like the railroad.net board, but I just read something that is very disturbing. There is a discussion going on about about MNRR's bar cars. See link here.
Through the course of conversation, on the second page, there are two posts mentioning the LIRR's barcart service, and THIS is the response of the moderator:

This is the MetroNorth Forum. Enought discussion of LIRR bar cart practices please. Take that over to the LIRR forum.

Thank you.

Kevin
Moderator, MNRR Forum

(The post is currently the last one on page two, but obviously that will change. The post was made on 8/19/04 on page 2).
Does anyone else find that outrageous?!?! Two posts about an on topic train post, even under the "bar car" heading, but just a different MTA railroad, and people get a response like that from the moderator? Gimme a break. How can anyone have intelligent conversation under conditions like that.

edf40wrjww2msgDetail:detailStr
I agree, the purpose of the moderator was to ensure that posters of a thread stick to the topic. Kevin was WAY TOO iron handed in saying that, what's the big deal if we were talking about LIRR from MNRR? They both use the same car equipment. And no one went political or ballastic on the thread.

We don't need moderators, just someone who can delete bad posts (ones that are offesive or flaming), and the posters themselves who don't behave properly.

That is exactly what a moderator does. And a well designed system would close bad threads rather than deleting them, except in extreme cases.

I wholeheartedly disagree. The lack of moderators is exactly what caused SubTalk to fall and if it is ever revived without moderators, it will inevitably fall again.

A message board without moderators is like a state without police.

Well there are plenty times when posts should be either deleted or threads stopped, but in this situation, I just didn't see he had to end the conversation. It seemed perfectly on topic. Conversation is not a subway straight tunnel. There are usually a few switches here and there within the tunnel. It would be very boring without those few switches. As long as the train doesn't derail, what's the big deal.

Clearly message board moderators can make bad decisions just as real police can but it's a lot easier to deal with the occassional bad moderation than with total bedlam. A message board with management that cares about the enjoyment of its users will rein in the destructive moderation.

And I don't think that the example you cited is so bad. If the software supports moving threads between boards, that should have been done.

When I first saw how much this board looked like SubTalk, I kind of felt bad because I saw there would be no point to bringing the original back so that we'd probably never see it again.

Now I feel better about this board because we have the same interface that I've enjoyed and all of the garbage has been weeded out for now (hopefully for all time).

And it's great to see you back too (and many others).

No, it's definitely not that bad, but neither were the two "LIRR" posts within the otherwise MNRR topic. They can move threads, I have seen it done (usually when the thread itself was off topic), but it shouldn't and couldn't be done for an otherwise on topic MNRR thread, with just two posts about a similar topic that came up in a discussion about bar cars. It is impossible to pick up that conversation somewhere else, because it is tied to the conversation within the MN thread.

Anyway, instead of moderators why don't we try control rods or a SCRAM?

My, my, how quickly we forget!

The original point of HTML was to divorce content from presentation. The viewer could then set the presentation to conform to his needs and preferences, to the extent possible on his device.

Few viewers ever noticed, and meanwhile webmasters insisted on going after presentation.

But the functionality is still there. Your browser (if it's a decent one) offers a Very Large Number of "skins," so to speak -- just fiddle with the background color, the foreground color, the font, etc.

It seems a lot more rational for the website to not force a particular presentation than for it to offer a variety of different presentations to force.
