There can be differences in the truck equalization under weight transfer, there can be differences in how gently the controls can ease the power up to just short of slipping, there can be differences in how much the controls let a slip run away and how they ease back out of a slip. All of these would be keenly observed by an engineer but none of them are to do with being loco hauled or MU. He just notices the big visual of a given loco or MU handling better, not the little visual of which printed circuit board type is in the locker. Even an MU's spreading out of the motors would be a tradeoff, multiple axles slipping would be harder to notice and harder to adjust for.In industry the operators are always very aware of differences in machinery performance, they are not always as certain about the actual underlying reasons why however. That's what design engineers are supposed to figure out. Bill |

Amtrak can run the AEM-7s for 36 years without "traction problems" and NJT has such "problems" with the ALP-44 derivative. The ALP-46s are lighter, so how come they somehow don't have such "traction problems"? (or maybe they will when NJT slacks on the maintenance like they slack on maintaining everything else?) They couldn't handle the HEP on the MLV's either That BS again, eh. That's on the MLVs rather than the locomotives. There's only 150 horsepower difference between the 44 and 46. |

I kno nuthin 'bout locos, so I have a question:The problem sounds like something that could be anticipated, as the grade in/out of the station didn't show up unexpectedly and the weight of the trains is not a mystery. So, why not A. Have 2 spare locos stationed to drag dead trains around. They can be high hours/high miles, as they only need to be used occasionally, plus test driven once a week/month/whatever. or B. Use a freight loco for the spare, with a weight/size waiver if needed sort as it is for emergency use. or C. Use one passenger mule, but with extra ballast. I doubt the wheels will fall off. btw, who/what is Terrapin? Is that account some kind of joke? |

MU's -have you ever found a technical explanation of whether it is the loco/MU concept or just the trucks/controls?ALP44/AEM7 weight -101 short tons is our ton, 2000 lbs. So the loco weight is 202,000 lbs, 2% over an ALP46 and within 1/2% of an ALP46A. Starting TE -TE specs are to do with loco weight, any current limits in the propulsion system and suspension/control methods. For 40 years diesels and the AEM7/ALP44 were uniformly rated and compared on 25% adhesion. The ALP46/46A was rated on 35% adhesion and some newer diesels are rated even higher. But the rails and dry weather haven't changed and I doubt that the wheels have become rubberized so why is the adhesion better? Because Bombardier thinks their better controls will let the engineer approach slipping more closely and they can demonstrate that in service. Having developed such controls they can be applied to any new loco or MU and one will see the same improvement. By way of comparison one of the arguments for 3 cylinder steam locomotives was that as the sum of cylinder thrusts is more uniform the loco can approach slipping more closely than a 2 cylinder engine whose thrust pulsates from 50 to 100% over each axle revolution. Its limiting TE is going to be much lower. Diesels/electrics don't have cyclic power in their motors but different control methods can introduce different ranges of pulsations while dealing with slipping and thus end up with the different useful ratings we see. Maybe the makers should be required to demonstrate TE performance, I venture that gently easing up to slipping the wheels would show the actual adhesion the trucks and controls can provide. More significantly I think it would vary widely from the arbitrary adhesion used in the specs. Because of guarantees the arbitrary spec adhesion is likely always lower than reality, but it will still vary with trucks and control methods Bill |
