I kno nuthin 'bout locos, so I have a question:

The problem sounds like something that could be anticipated, as the grade in/out of the station didn't show up unexpectedly and the weight of the trains is not a mystery.

So, why not
A. Have 2 spare locos stationed to drag dead trains around. They can be high hours/high miles, as they only need to be used occasionally, plus test driven once a week/month/whatever.
or
B. Use a freight loco for the spare, with a weight/size waiver if needed sort as it is for emergency use.
or
C. Use one passenger mule, but with extra ballast. I doubt the wheels will fall off.

btw, who/what is Terrapin? Is that account some kind of joke?
