You'd think with protect engines stationed at Penn that they'd be able to pull a dead train out of the east end of the tube in less than one hour and without having to back three trains out to NJ. Even at around 10 am it was still single track with 15 eastbounds stacked up between the west portal and Newark. |

The AEM7 had a bitch of a time hauling the MLV's, plus the dead ALP in. They had to back into the tunnel off the steepest part of the grade to get a running start. |

If you expect media link elaborating on MLV's and AEM7's and their weight and tractive effort, you're nuts. From a friend I know "Here’s a comment from a well-placed source. Tried to drag it in with an AEM-7 that was in standby service. A loaded train of multi-level cars (1,000 riders) equates to almost 100 tons of flesh plus the weight of the train itself. It was more weight than the AEM-7 could start on the grade. Had to back into the tunnel to get a running start." |

They piss me off every day preparing to get off the train in Newark. They love to park themselves on the steps of the MLV's, blocking the aisles when there is ample room in the outer ends of the car, but have one hand on their phone, ears stuffed with plugs, the other on their bag, and they are just one lurch away from going head over ass and getting a concussion falling off the steps. |

I've heard that Amtrak does not like the MU's on their territory because of the amount of pantographs compared to the one pantograph on the push pull equipment. They prefer less pantographs so there would be less wear and tear on the catenary wires... |

Maybe if they would replace the catenary wires when they're supposed to, it would not be such a problem. SEPTA's still all-MU, so they're going to have to put up with that. |

None of the starting difficulty is to do with loco hauled vs MU, nor with catenary, nor with what other cities do. New York is probably the only operation with substantial 2 % grades, both rivers too and at the traffic choke point. Roaring along the flat main at speed will be easy, it is getting halted on that grade that is always going to be the dicey propulsion capacity issue. Tuesday's whole rescue problem is to do with that exceptional grade. If a 10 car train is already at loco capacity then the dead loco is going to effectively add 1.25-1.5 more cars' weight making rescue difficult. Likewise if one MU out of 10 fails the rest are also going to have to find 11% more adhesion to restart. About the same problem in both cases. Our range of loco models won't make a difference either. AEM-7's, ALP-44's and ALP-46's are all about 100 tons on drivers. What traction they can get on a given day depends more on rail conditions than on the maker's opinion of what adhesion factor he can put into his tractive effort rating. Bill |

Of course, but Amtrak claims they don't have the money to do that kind of maintenance. And as far as the SEPTA equipment, they run much shorter trains (less pantographs) and run less often... |
