A Subway question

Friends of mine are catching a Subway this Saturday at 34th- Herald Sq. for Coney Island. I told them to be sure to stand on the Downtown-Brooklyn platform, and the train will say Coney Isl;and when it pulls in (Stillwell Ave).
It's that simple, correct?

Almost.

If they are on the DFMQ platform (known as the Orange Line by some tourists :) ) all trains headed downtown will work: F on the right, D on the left when looking downtown.

If they are on the NQR (yellow) downtown platform the N on the right and the Q on the left will work, but the R on the right won't get them there.

So they have a 5/6 chance of getting the correct train, but can improve their chances by making sure the train actually says it goes to Coney Island.

That's actually quite something: 4 totally different routes to get to the exact same place, all available from 1 station.

There are two levels at that station, each with 4 tracks and 2 platforms. As far as the downtown platforms go on weekends:

Upper level:
express track - (Q) to Coney Island (Brighton Line)
local track - (N) to Coney Island (Sea Beach Line)
(R) to Bay Ridge-95th St
Lower level:
express track - (D) to Coney Island (West End Line)
local track - (F) to Coney Island (Culver Line)

The (N)(Q)(D) all run via the Manhattan Bridge. This does not take into account any diversions which may be in effect. BTW, with the NY subway, it's NEVER "that simple"!

Enjoy,

Bob

The trip planner told them not to take the R.

...except that this Saturday, the R will be on 6th Avenue, so if they're on the BMT platform then any train will go to Coney Island, while on the IND platform, only two of the three routes will go there.

On the NQR platform, the N and Q will both be on the right and will both go to Coney Island.

On the BDFM platform, the D on the left and the F on the right will go to Coney Island, but the R on the right will not.

The train will "say" Coney Island only if it's an R160. If they get an older train the conductor will hopefully announce it manually. Also, if they have the time I would advise them to take the Q. They get spectacular views of the lower Manhattan skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge from the right side of the train as it crosses the bridge; also (unlike the N) it runs above ground from Ave H to Stillwell Av. A second choice would be the D which gives good views of southern Brooklyn from the el south of 9th Av.

Of the four routes to Coney Island from Herald Square, which one is the quickest on the weekend, assuming regular routing and no delays?

During the week, I assume it's the B, with the only full-line express service in Brooklyn.

Except the B doesn't go to Coney Island. Changing for the Q at Sheepshead Bay adds time.
