Like I said, definitely something interesting. There ARE accounts of a station existing there but nothing I could find from any of the official records. I've always been a sucker for a good mystery. :)

I found it an interesting hunt ... most turn up more results than this one did, so I'm grateful for the opportunity to do some digging and also glad to see there's possibly more to it.

As to the usual suspects, well ... that's what keeps this place interesting now that the rustbirds are gone. :)

I just received an email photo from an individual who reads subchat but does not post. The photo is of a temporary station at 230 and BROADWAY and the photo is looking southeast and appears to have been taken from the northwest corner of 230/Bway. Since I'm still a bit computer illiterate, I wasn't able to post the photo to subchat.

Are you sure it wasn't 221st and Broadway? There was a temporary station there.

Based on the New York Times article on 226th Street's opening, it seems like it was commonplace to open a temporary wooden station as soon as the steel reached a location, rather than wait for the permanent station to be completed. It may very well be that the temporary 231st Street station was at 230th Street.

From what I've read on this thread - and I haven't read it all - nobody mentioned the Moscotta Ave stop that appears on the 1904 IRT map Kevin showed us. Looks like it was about at the present 225 St stop. What happened to Moscotta Ave? Bialey Ave, at least, still exists.

Might Moscotta Ave. simply be an old name for what is now 225th St? That would also make it the street that the "Free Bridge" was on when the Harlem River still followed its original course.

Very interesting. The streetcar on the extreme right would seem to be coming from the area of Riverdale Ave., along 230 St., and the open cut just behind it would be the former route of the Hudson Line, some track remnants of which were visible in the U-Haul parking lot until not so long ago.

What happened to Moscotta Ave?

It was and is the present 225 Street Station. It was originally called Muscoota Street when the subway opened and was re-named at some later date. Muscoota was an Indian name for the Harlem River. It means "river along the green sedge".

I know that the book is rare, but does anyone, besides me, have a copy of, "A History of the New York City Subway System, Part 1 (The Manhattan Els and the IRT)? Page 30 says that a temporary station was opened on March 12th, 1906 at 221st St/Broadway on the northern tip of Manhattan.
Now, go to page 33 to the "1907" section. The line was extended over the river to the current 225th Street station on Jan 14th, 1907, using the new Broadway Bridge. Service was extended to a TEMPORARY station at 230th St/Broadway, reusing the same structure that had been at 221st St. EXACT QUOTE- "It was decided not to run to Bailey Ave., but to continue to 242nd Street and Van Cortlandt Park".
Tunnelrat, the station never existed at Bailey Ave. And it was never moved to 242nd street. Your friend is confusing the temporary station at 230th/Broadway with one that was NEVER built at Bailey Ave. The temporary station at 221st St/Broadway was dismantled and moved to 230th St/Broadway, not to 230th St/Bailey Ave. I hope this solves this mystery once and for all!!!
