Relax, bro ... I was coming around to your opinion in my own way. Aside from the new info (and photo!) that RIPTA posted today, the interesting part about the street railway was that the PSC had NOT hit up the Interborough for geological data which they most certainly would have had any construction actually occurred there.

Be patient, bro ... I'm not stubborn. :)

Don't know other than you can see that there was once a station there, and those apartment buildings follow Bailey Avenue. The main line ran along the water's edge similarly to how it does now. Back in the 1950's, those apartment buildings were about all there was at the time. Not also the big billboard on the top of one of the tenements which would be facing the Marble Hill stop.

The caption says north and would be consistent with the rest of the series as they all appear to be facing up-station, to the north. But i that is the power plant at 207th, then obviously the caption is wrong.

That branch there was the original route of the Hudson line around the old boundary of the creek prior to it being filled in and realigned to its present route south of Marble Hill. But that's the Hudson River Railroad of the NY Central there as the old alignment.

Maybe the IRT was more interested in connecting with the Hudson Line vs. The Put. So when the Hudson Line was rerouted, that allowed for the connection to be made at 225/Marble Hill. So then there was no longer a need to cozy up to the Kingsbridge station.

In fact, based on the wealth of information provided by Joseph Brennan's website, I don't see how this could be anything other than the newly rerouted NYC Hudson Line. That is, if this photo was actually taken anywhere near the area in question. Because it looks more to me to be showing a subway portal. Which would mean the caption is completely wrong.

The creek though bulged in that direction before it was fully filled in. Won't argue, but the position of the tracks vs the apartment buildings definitely says Putnam. That trackage was still active as was the Kingsbridge yards where JFK High is now back when I was a kid. They didn't add the yardage tracks over by the Put until after the Spuyten Duyvil yard closed.

From what I gathered in the documents, the Put stop didn't have all that much traffic. But looks like PSC really wanted to get trains up to Van Cortlandt more so than over there. Haven't seen anything regarding Interborough's attitudes as to where the train went yet though. Given how long the trip time is for the IRT from there, if you were going to take the Central, might as well just stay on the train and save the 18 minutes.

Yep ... entirely possible. In the other photo, they got the location correct but the direction wrong. Therefore, assuming that the second photo was also the correct location, then it would have to be the Put before the main line ran right at the water's edge. But if the location's wrong, all bets are off.

This may sound like a rant, but I have met at least three types of archivists, librarians, or curators:
1) Those who are really interested in the contents of the files, but may not be trained in "library science."
2) Those professionals who assiduouisly follow the generalized and current theories of their profession, but are only mildly interested in the contents of collections.
3) Those whose chief aim is cull from the collection items that have not been looked at in the past year or two.
---
I would prefer competent people, enthusiastic about the collection, and willing to keep stuff that might be of interest fifty or eighty years from now.
---
We also have problems with people too young to know offhand what IRT means or who write books about railroads they never rode. That leads to the identification of photos miles away from the location (River Avenue vs. Marble Hill).
Joe

Greatt article. Not only is quite informative, seeming to disprove the existence of the 230th/Bailey Station (the old terminus of the line was 221 Street), the article is also quite humorous, with the unknown "Brother Peary" stumbling out of the train. He was probably drunk, and had no idea where he was or that he'd created transit history.
