I think the answer is obvious, but NYPD because they are responding to emergencies and IIRC they have MetroCards already. Not sure if off-duty cops should ride free though. Same with NYFD. |

There is a positive externality from emergency workers riding mass transit in that they can respond to emergencies! There is little positive externality from other city employees. |

Why should other workers pay for city workers' free rides? What about those who would rather keep the money for something else? If they would give employees something from taxes, then it should be higher pay, although I think they should pay them whatever the market rate for such a position is. |

Getting a Senior Citizen Reduced Fare Card shouldn't be an issue since the EPIC PASSES are not honored outside of the NYCT Subways and Buses.I see it as an equivalent of having an EPIC PASS and a regular Metrocard. If I get on a MTA Bus for instance, I'll use my regular full fare card. I never flash my pass and I don't expect a free ride either. -Stef |

NYPD cops get an unlimited metrocard and they are capable of consecutive swipes although they are tracked and can come under scrutiny for abuse. There was an incident a few years back when cops couldn't chase a perp into a station because they lacked cards and couldn't get thru the full height turnstile. |

The only reason city employees should be issued a metrocard is if they are traveling for official city business during work hours. Not used for travelling to and from work. In fact travelling via public transportation should be mandatory unless its an emergency or transporting of items. During Bloomberg's administration he has tried to reduce the amount of city cars that were and are often abused. |

Years ago there were article in the Daily News indicating that many people seem to think that all city employees ride free on the NYCTS and that was never true. Free rides were permitted to all NYCTS employees, and members of the NYPD and FDNY. At one time Fire fighters and POs were allowed free access whether in or out of uniform but that has been modified in various ways over the years. |

I have heard that the MTA wants to establish a separate pension system apart from NYCERS for new hires but I have no further info. |

The reason that is allowed goes back to the establishment of the original NYCTA in 1953. Once it was established that city tax revenue would no longer be used for employee wages or salaries, the requirement that NYCTS employees live within the city was abolished. |

NYCT employees ride free on the subway system & LOCAL transit buses.MTA Bus employees ride free on their fleet. What is suppose to happen is that the employee swipes/dips their ID(MC). That ID is also used to swipe in & out. |
