I don't think anyone has been inside the sealed doors for that never-built 3rd Ave subway. Essex, Bowery, Canal, and Chambers all have some secrets. You might ask Tunnelrat about the Bowery, He's been everywhere!

Any relation to the backfilled excavations on lower Lexington Ave?

Well all new light rail (Eglington Cross Town, Finch LRT, and others) will be back to standard gauge in Toronto. So yep, not changing, but running incompatible.

Speaking of Chambers St., if you look very quickly out the right side of a Queens-bound Curly or sZemp train just after entering the tunnel, you can see the two extra trackways that were put in for possible station expansion.

Mark, thank you for posting these. I especially liked the one about the Centre St subway early construction. As you head to Broad St on the "J", there was a wall pocket on Centre St, after the tracks curve left from Kenmare St. I was unaware that this was for a Grand St connector tunnel to the Desbrosses St Ferry. I thought
that the spur was to have run to the Spring St Ferry, via Cleveland Place. Live and learn!
